Fair enough. The way i viewed it was motte for the second and a swap between Dermott and Schenn who are both locked in on deals through next season. Dermott is the younger piece that can play either right or left side but due to the fact Schenn makes 800,000 next season and Dermott makes 1.5, its not completely unreasonable to squeeze another late round pick

I agree. I'm not really on board with moving Garland specifically due to the fact he is a quality top 6 piece locked in at a reasonable cap hit for 4 more years after this one but if the Canucks are really serious about moving him, this seems like a reasonable return. As for motte and schenn I do like them but ultimately they are expendable pieces. Penguins fans i am genuinely curious. Do you think some sort of Boeser for Marino swap is possible or fair? Canucks are desperate to add a top 4 RHD. I don't watch the pens too much so i'm not exactly sure of how the fan base views him but i know he's pretty good.

You are exactly right. Im not saying this is what i would personally do, but Jim Benning and ownership are set on making the playoffs and i think these would be moves that could help for this season and moving forward

Schmidt and Reinhart trade ideas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yztnuK</b></div><div>the canucks dont need the cap relief as they can retain salary on Holtby and make it a positive value trade rather then a negative value
schmidt is not burdensome, in fact it is being reported [non canuck reporters] there is a market for Schmidt and there were numerous GM upset that vegas didnt give them a chance to trade for him
There is numerous you tube clips of reinharts career where he has given up on plays and the other team has scored, during end of game pressers, he acknowledges he did.</div></div>
I get where you are coming from, but i disagree. I think it would just be a much better move to move off Holtby's contract completely rather than retain, even if it costs a pick to do so. I dont think there would be much interest league wide for Holtby as he is just not very good anymore and on an expensive deal.
As for Schmidt i do think he would have some interest around the league, but that contract is very expensive and the term would be worrisome. I know i would be very cautious to acquire a guy who just had a down season for 4 years at almost 6 mil per and i would suspect other gm's around the league would be very cautious as well.
As for Reinhart, i just cant base analysis off of youtube clips. The fact remains he has been a very good top 6 player for years and actually has a really good analytical profile in terms of his 2 way game.

Schmidt and Reinhart trade ideas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yztnuK</b></div><div>Seattle - bad for the canucks as they are adding an unnecessary sweetener
Blues - Scandella is bad contract for an average dman - at least schmidt is a better dman
Buffalo 1 - Adding any picks to any trade that involve getting a sub 30 year old back is a bad asset move
Buffalo 2 - trading 3 pieces of draft/prospect future for a player that lacks determination and character is also bad asset management</div></div>
Addressing Seattle- There is no guarantee that Seattle takes Holtby, they could just snag lind or gadjovich. The Canucks need that cap relief and Seattle taking him would be a huge relief and would save them from buyout
Addressing St. Louis- I believe the Nate Schmidt contract is a burden for teams and the canucks would need to fill that hole with a body. Even though the Canucks get back a worse d man, at least they get someone who can play and is a relief in terms of cap space
Addressing Buffalo- I have not heard anything about Reinhart having character issues and being unmotivated. I can only go off of what i know and what i know is he is a very good top 6 calibre winger/centre who is a great player and provides flexibility throughout the lineup whether he is playing down the middle or on the wing.

If we are being completely honest Schmidt is a far better player than Scandella and they would get him for essentially over half retained for 3 of the 4 years. So the use of the term "shed" meaning they are able to move off the Scandella contract which they are openly interested in doing

Now that the trade request has gone public, the Blues really don't have any leverage. Hard to really say what the return might be but its probably gonna be underwhelming. I still think they could get a pretty strong pick or two for him from a team with cap space. What scares me is if STL has to take an unwanted contract back... which seems to be the trend in the armchair section. Just get the cap space and a pick or two and move on.</div></div>
Yeah you would think he might fetch a late 1st and a B level prospect or something like that in a trade. I do think they are going to have to take back some salary but I think they can get away with eating a contract that will be expiring after this season. Looking at this roster though this team looks a little underwhelming. Although there seems to be some money to play around with in free agency, this looks like it could be the start of a rebuild in St. Louis, or at least thats the route i would consider going if i were Armstrong.

Do you think his value has dropped this far? Obviously we have no idea what he would fetch on the trade market right now but it's interesting to see blues fans perspective on his value. With his deal only having 2 years left you would think he might have more value but obviously with his injuries there is just no telling how healthy or effective he can be throughout the course of a season.

I think McDonagh is getting claimed by Seattle and a guy like Johnson has negative value on his deal. Tampa would have to give up decent assets to shed Johnson's cap hit. Palat is UFA after next season so it might be in Tampa's best interest to bite the bullet and trade Gourde and the 4 years remaining on that deal

The cap hit is for sure large but if he is able to regain form from his Vegas days, the cats could have a legit top 4 d man in him. I think the canucks taking back Nutivaara's 2.7 would make it more enticing for the cats because they would essentially get Schmidts first season at a 40% discount

could this work
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Trade constructions like this illustrate why far fewer teams than Buffalo fans think are going to be jumping into the "Eichel bidding war" they predict is going to break out any day now, if this is the actual price Buffalo expects to get. This particular deal strips the Wild of significant assets, both current and future, as Caerii says above (#2), and in my (and apparently his) eyes, doesn't make this team a strong Cup contender despite the effort. Fiala, Kahkonen and Boldy have all, to some extent, proven their bona fides as NHL-quality players. That 2021 first could also turn into an NHLer as soon as 2023. In contrast, Eichel's $10 million cap hit puts an immediate and permanent restriction on the Wild's maneuvering room. (Look at the cap space here.)
Trading Dumba for futures (thereby improving Minnesota's expansion-draft alternatives), or to Tampa one or more of the Lightning's overpaid forwards like Yanni Gourde (even if the Wild have to retain) or, even better, to Arizona for Nick Schmaltz or Christian Dvorak seems to me to be a much better strategy. Jack Eichel isn't the magic answer for the Wild.</div></div>
Your not wrong and i do not think the wild should be fixated on acquiring Eichel as their are many other targets out there that could be acquired in a number of creative ways. As for the cap space Zuccarello's nmc expires after this season and i think that is a contract that could be moved next offseason although the wild would probably have to retain or add an asset to get him off the books. I think the wild would be ok moving off their own first because they have Pittsburghs just a couple picks later. All in all, personally i actually believe this is a team that could be a strong contender as it is a team from the top to the bottom that consistently produces favorable analytic results for the most part although the aging blueline is obviously a concern. But I want to make clear i am in no way saying this is the only option or even the best option, but it is an option nonetheless. One thing is clear to me, this team needs a major upgrade at the centre position and i think a Jack Eichel trade is certainly a viable option.

Internal Use Only
This would be a super interesting offseason. I think that might be too much for Tampa to give up but they are in such a tough position cap wise so that might realistically be what it costs to move off Johnsons contract completely and take back Ferlands LTI. Personally i wouldn't want to bring back Hamonic especially at that contract. I would much prefer someone like Kevan Miller or Tucker Poolman who have decent underlying defensive results for cheaper but I think this could be a really nice aggressive offseason so we know that means Benning wont do it lol

I understand these are significant assets, but in order to acquire eichel, significant assets are going to need to be dealt. Not saying i completely disagree with you, but if you can determine eichel can be healthy moving forward Buffalo is going to want these pieces, and how could you blame them? Whether or not it is worth it for the wild to give up on these assets is where i think we disagree but it is fair to be skeptical.

2) Zuccarello is still very much a viable top six winger, and his contract will have two years left after this one. Worst case scenario he could be moved if we retain a bit. It's not going to require paying someone to move.</div></div>
I am not claiming to know anything the insiders don't know. If a trade were impending i would assume it would be in Buffalo's best interest to share the medical records. Nobody is going to pay market value for him unless they are somewhat certain of what is going on. As for Zuccarello to move him you might not have to give up any assets at all but retention in a trade is still significant as every dollar is going to count moving forward considering this teams cap situation
