What a culture Dubas has left behind
well, can't list matthews or nylander bc you cant give kyle credit for extending the two best playoff performers (old extension, not the one about to kick in, at 7 mil no less)... cant mention morgan reilly's extension because hes the best defenseman you have because you have to give kyle credit... cant mention matthew knies because kyle drafted him... cant mention bringing in mccabe at 2 million for 2 and a half years because you cant give kyle credit... cant give kyle credit for the ryan o reilly/ noel acciari trade last year, an actual good trade... then we had to not give credit to nick robertson for scoring 14 goals in 56 games at age 22 just because he did nothing in the playoffs, the same nothing offered by david kampf and ryan reaves, because then we have to give kyle credit...
what else... right, we cant mention extending david kampf who did nothing in the playoffs (except for 1 meaningless goal in a game they were already getting clobbered 4-0) because nothing is brads fault, we cant mention giving ryan reaves 2 mil per over 3 years on a 35+ deal because nothing is brads fault, we cant mention that brad's blueline trade acquisitions were lyubushkin and edmunson when chris tanev was available because nothing is brads fault and brad certainly could not have worked out such a complicated trade the way kyle could have, surely... and we cant mention that brad brought in guys to play boston bruins hockey rather than toronto maple leafs hockey... because nothing is brad's fault and everything is kyle's fault, surely.
and the shanaplan worked and shanahan was right to fire kyle, right when kyle wanted to make change and move out marner before his NMC kicked in, just as everyone is demanding as we speak, 365 days later. and yeah, i thihnk kyle dubas is perfect im just so happy that i get to watch ryan graves suck at hockey for the next 5 years im just thrilled cant you tell? clearly i can blindly defend all the moves he made because i think he's perfect and he can do no wrong just as you think he can do no right...
if you want to blame kyle for leaving keefe in charge after the montreal debacle, then fine, your perogative, but at what point does brendan shanahan ever get any blame for anything? he could have easily instructed kyle to fire keefe then, or after 22, or after 23, when each time, it was clearly time to move on. but no, the only change that needs to be made is kyle, because everything and every failure is kyle's fault, its not shanahans fault, its not keefes fault, and its certainly not the players fault. that is the crux of why i have such a problem with kyles departure and the picture painted about him as he left because all the blame was shifted onto him as opposed to spread throughout the organization, and the second he was ready to make change and try something new, he was fired, and he was basically shoved out the door without an inkling of respect. ron hextall was objectively the worst gm in the nhl last year, and he was shown more dignity and respect when he was fired last april, which seems impossible, and yet my statement is somehow true.
tl;dr, cant give kyle credit for any good thing he did because then hes not the horrific gm you paint him to be, cant fault brad for any bad decision he made because its simply too easy to blame kyle for a failure he wasnt part of, and shift blame to shanahan and everyone else, because my God does he deserve a lot of blame for the last 12 months and beyond that.

so if you can just shove shea weber's contract onto LTIR, why would owner ryan smith approve that deal? why wouldnt he just send a couple of the 14 top 3 round picks he has over the next 3 years to make that deal happen?

-i dont think edmonton would do that value, they might want him as their 4C (ryan mcleod go brrrrrrrrrr) so you will probably have to find a different dance partner there.
-idk about POJ in the top 4. maybe him and JSI together on the 3rd pair would be good, i think they would compliment each other well.
-i get the thinking behind stammer bc we reeeeeeally need a pure goal scorer. dont think he takes the money or the term.
-b6 is... interesting, and certainly better than many of the other armchair gm constructed bottom 6 group. but i question if that group has the speed and defensive capabilities HCMS wants. still, to me, it looks like a better group than what was cobbled together last season (and flip barabanov and jarnkrok)

what would you want back in an ehlers trade in theory? of course its probably better to keep him and see if you can hammer out an extension. but ya know... rumors swirl. i heard chevy would accept free primanti bros and tickets to paul skenes first career start, but that was not from a very reliable source...

of all the uses of that 1st round pick, using it for a cap dump to acquire the most defensively responsible forward kyle dubas employs is certainly a choice. not one kyle is inclined to assist in, but ya know, certainly a choice.

Pens 2025
this does not address the fundamental issues with the team: the left side behind pettersson is broken and needs a stay-at-home defense-first defender, the bottom 6 lacks speed and scoring, and is largely unproven. there was little to suggest that cookie should play higher than the 4th line, there was little to suggest that rickard rakell could function on the 3rd line (or any line, until he played with geno and bunts), and throwing an unholy amount of cash at sam reinhart will cripple the teams long-term flexibility in fixing any one of these issues. and yes, i understand the desire for youth in the b6. i like the idea of pono. i like bemstrom a bit. liked puusty's playmaking but he needs to shoot more and get to the middle of the ice more. would like to see some combo of them play with a vet, perhaps if you can find a 3C upgrade and move eller to 4C, then you have something.

NO.
You are stuck with that mess. Don't even bother.
You got nothing to add to make the penguins want to take that off your hands.
If you want Acciari we are more than happy to send him to you for a low round pick.
If not we'll keep him as 4C he's a very low cap hit and a good PKer.</div></div>
i was obligated to watch the pens godforsaken bottom 6 last year much like you were, dont pretend hayes wouldnt be an upgrade on the 3rd line. id rather have other guys on the market (like warren foegele but thats a different story). there are other options via trade. i also never said he was the best option, or even their 3rd or 4th option. i said he was an option, and thats it. besides, STL can always retain salary to get the number down further. cookie didnt fit. its fine. reilly didnt fit. graves didnt fit. some guys just dont fit. roll the dice on someone else, or put him on the wing. but dont bring him back at 4c.

washington had been shopping nic dowd at the deadline and hes about as defensively responsible as it gets, and he chipped in 10 goals, so im sure they would take offers on him this offseason. theres also the russian kid ponomarev that they acquired in the guentzel trade. so theres 2 options.
also, what the heck are they gonna do with graves? cant possibly keep him. the team defensively was better without him, and that defensive squad still sucked. id entertain a buyout unless someone willfully took his contract at 1.5 retention and a mid round pick. but in either case, whatever his trade value is, they cannot run it back with him. not even at 3rd pair.

i thought kyle gave him a fair contract its just he doesnt really fit in PIT. he played slow, didnt really establish himself physically, didnt spend much time forchecking and pressuring in the offensive zone. based on his past production and toolset, 2 mil was reasonable. sometimes the player just doesnt fit, and cookie didnt fit.
also, yeah the drury trade stinks, among other things. 5/6 year deals probably arent being handed out to any free agent this offseason. 3 years at the most i would imagine.

well then his linemates just werent good enough or he just never fit the system because he had like maybe 1 or 2 shifts a game where they could establish pressure and otherwise he was either invisible or getting caved in at the defensive zone. either way, i had goods hopes for him and he just didnt pan out. harkins was an offensive blackhole and nieto wasnt much better. old man carts was really his best option but i dont remember them playing much together earlier in the season, nor did carts really step up until like the last 25 games of the season.

-will any senators fan tell me what is erik brannstroms value? because he seems like a really fascinating player and i kinda want to see him to play with erik karlsson (in pittsburgh lol) and see what would happen. problem is, i havent heard jack crap as to what the organization thinks of him, what the fan base thinks of him, what the media thinks of him, what his trade value in theory is, or really anything else about him that isnt an analytics player card or his player page on nhl.com. his analytics suggest hes a good player. i dont know how true that is, nor do i know if ottawa would consider moving him.
all i know is that i dont want jake chychrun and have no interest in him anymore, and i would much rather roll the dice on a younger player that might be ready to step into a greater role that ottawa might not be able to offer.
-that bottom 6 group is still kinda mid. and as the kings have proven, there is zero reason to pay a 3rd line center 8 million dollars. theres other, cheaper players that can be signed or acquired via trade. and worrying about geno's replacement seems like a next year problem, not a this year problem.

-the pens trade is interesting and hayes would be a fallback option at the least. not sure they would want him but he would certainly be an upgrade in the bottom 6 group. the only thing is, he wouldnt be the first option that they would look at. as for you guys taking back acciari, i dont really know how to evaluate him because he was completely neutered by being forced to play center. the edge and the bite we were sold on getting from him was completely non-existent and im convinced its because he played center opposed to wing. i think the pens get the better player in that deal for sure but the fit for hayes is iffy.

you make that return sound so encouraging and wonderful, it just excites me that we could install a prospect pipeline filled with meh with more meh.
jokes and sarcasm aside, i think it makes more sense to keep him and extend him in PIT, in either scenario of rebuild or not. hes the best defensive defenseman they have, and even if they rebuild, he would be a good veteran presence to have in the transition period to help the rookies develop a routine and mentor them. i think some in the pens media believe he looks like a guy that at some point will get an "A" on his jersey after tanger decides to retire, i could be wrong, but i think he's earned the A. point is, good player, good to have around, and a guy i wouldnt move unless someone offered heaven and earth

so... very quietly he's been very good in top pair minutes over the last two years. shuffled between karlsson and letang this year and produced strong results with both despite their defensive deficiencies. its not just that his analytics are good but his eye test is quite good too. best in the league? clearly not. is he still a top pair defenseman? yes.

kyle dubas might not be as familiar with the pens/ flyers rivalry but keith jones and daniel briere most certainly are... those two teams do not make trades. ever. and when they do, they usually have a team act as an intermediary (peep the 2017 mark streit trade, shoutout to stanley cup champion mark streit). all this this to say, i dont see the jarry trade happening with the flyers. even so, it might be hard to find a team willing to offer a pair of 2nds for jars considering that, for anyone who doesnt know, he has lost his job to alex nedeljkovic.
