Savard, a veteran dman was signed by the habs, Matheson is also a vet, while majority of the habs d corps after are grown through their system. For some reason, NHL teams like having veteran presences to play with their young talent so why not take a free Ceci who is a serviceable dman and will almost guarantee value back at the deadline if you trade him with retention this year or next. The trade is built similarly to the Kulikov trade (from MIN to ANA), however, Ceci makes a bit more money but at the same time plays a more prominent role on his team. If not the habs, I'm sure a team will take him for free as there was interest in him this summer.

Not sure if Pittsburgh has the cap to fit him even with the retention but I don't think the value goes much higher than the 5th even if they retain 1-1.2 mil.

OTT has been interested in Kassian for a while, even though I also think it's a bad trade for them, we've seen worse trades happen before. Klefbom likely isn't playing again so just an LTIR contract for them.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles5513</b></div><div>It’s not remotely fair lol. Isles have no need for Foegele.</div></div>

Manson deal was a 2nd and a decent prospect. Mayfield deal is a 2nd and an NHL player. The values seem very similar to me. There is no team that'll offer more than that for a guy who is playing bottom pairing minutes on a non playoff team. Just because you're not winning the trade doesn't make it unfair, the isles get value back for 3rd pairing guy who is likely to walk after this season anyway. And as for the fans who watch him, they're fans for a reason, fans typically overvalue their players (look at any MTL armchair), if a fan of neither of these teams looked at the deal I would beleive they'd think it's even.

You got Pulock and Dobson playing in your top 4, that leaves mayfield with bottom pairing minutes and little special teams time. It's in the best interest for the isles to trade him before his contract is up. They get a pick which will help them with their weak prospect pool and a player who can play right now. I've only seen isles fans say Mayfield is worth more so I'm gonna assume it's a fair deal.

Mayfield is pretty solid from the back end. Kind of similar to Ceci I think, and if they're playing Keith, they need a good dman paired with him. That's also why I don't have Broberg playing as the the left side is already filled up but I assume there'll be injuries throughout the year so he'll get good playing time anyway.
The 4th line is in the air for me, I don't know who to put there with the limited cap space they have. So it's not ideal but something like that is probable.

If the dman market revolves around the Jones and Chairot trades, it would be in no teams' interest to make a trade for a defenseman. Both takes make sense, but I sure hope dmen nowadays aren't overpriced.

He was paid for what he did, not for what he will do in the future. But keep telling yourself he is worth something, it just might come true.</div></div>
But you're ignoring my reasoning as to why I see him getting value back. I'm not saying he's worth the return, but he will get something considering the past returns for other dmen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OrganizedConfusion55</b></div><div>He is a cap dump. He makes too much money for his talent. Hence why every oiler fan wants him out. Just like the sabres have wanted okposo out (this is the first year he has played close to his cap hit) There are players like him all over the NHL, and if they are moved, it cost the team to get rid of that contract. Barrie would cost at least a 2nd to get rid of.</div></div>
The difference between Okposo and Barrie is that, Barrie has one bad year in TOR and this year in EDM. While Okposo has been bad for 3-4 years straight prior to this season. Barrie had interest while he was a UFA, oilers shouldn't have to add a sweetener for team to grab him. Again, he's still a decent NHL player, just not quite the right fit on the oilers. Also, if you can tell me a recent trade where a team trades an okay NHL player along with a sweetener for a team to take him on then I might reconsider my decision.

I never said Barrie was good, he's still an NHL dman just a sheltered role with pp time now. I agree that his contract is bad but you rarely see NHL calibure players being a cap dump now. Plus we've seen worse trades involving worse dmen before. I don't think there's a trade in recent memory where a team had to add value for another team to take an NHL player. Maybe Barrie won't get a 2nd, but a 3rd is more probable considering the Keith and Schmidt trades.

Varlamov won't likely play in Canada. Might have to move him to an American team. He also will only fetch you a pair of 2nds at best (more likely a 2nd and 3rd and maybe a lower end prospect).
I'd trade mayfield away for a forward, picks or prospects. He has an expiring deal at the end of the year and the isles don't have cap or roster space for him. A bottom pairing dman is easily replacable, and the value you can get back for him will be fairly nice.

Really doubt the oilers would have to add to move on from Barrie. Nobody can speak for NHL teams' management but with the past records of horrible trades for dmen, I can certainly see Barrie getting back some kind of value even if it is low. The only cap dump trades we see today are guys who are healthy scrathes or play in the minors.

Yeah that makes sense, I know Buffalo needs RD just not the type Barrie is. Another suggested I had was moving him to Dallas with Klingberg likely going to FA.

Teams have no problems playing Left handed players on the right side so it should be the same for the oilers and Braun. There's a huge 2LD hole on the team and the cheapest option that helps strengthen the team defensively would be Braun.

It's a fair price I think for Mayfield. The value adds up to be probably on par with a 1st and I think it works out in favour for both teams.
I can see why SEA declines given their position in the standings but I'm sure a team out there would take Barrie for a similar price.

I like Chych but he's gonna cost way too much for what he can bring. I don't want to sacrafice too much of the future for a 2LD, while we have Broberg who can play there in the next 1-2 seasons.
Barrie is too much of a liability for me defensively and doesn't fit in well on the team. The back end needs to be a little more sound defensively and heavier (as seen from last game), so Braun would be a good cheap fit that I think will improve the team.
