Fair point... I agree that deal isn't even close to fair value for Rakell. Honestly wasn't paying that close attention at that point. My bad.
Omit that trade and plug in a signing or trade for a player with minimal term and the potential to bounce back from a mediocre season. Like Schwartz or Haula if the price is right. Or a Goodrow, Nosek type.

I agree... idea was to present a worst case... @ 6.5 no way TB matches... Signing for less allows for even more flexibility to acquire depth at the deadline.

Figured it'd be a stretch to get Madden back... Wanted to sign Toffoli, just don't see it working long-term money-wise.

Already did... sure you signed the big players, but the supporting cast is same old same old... not enough to be competitive in my opinion.

Decent but a little stagnant... not sure this year's D-core + Rafferty is enough of an upgrade 2 years later?

Compliance Buyouts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Booyah</b></div><div>Wheres Mittelstadt? I wouldnt give Gauds more money than Shotgun Jake, Toffoli could probly get better money on open market, and no return of both Stecher and Tanev?</div></div>
Mittelstadt's on the list of non-roster players (where I found him on Buffalo's list) first up to get a call up or a bargaining chip at the deadline... Gaudette vs. Virtanen could be debated I don't disagree either way, I just defaulted to giving the center more money for some reason...
IMO the ship has more or less sailed on getting a return for Tanev unless he gets re-signed. With this scenario though there is still cap room to re-sign Tanev to a 3-4 year deal, just means one of the young guys has to wait for an injury to get called up. I wouldn't be against that.
As for Stecher, he is an RFA so I suppose I should've shown a trade of his rights at least... OR with the above scenario I wouldn't be against moving Benn for a late draft pick and then re-signing Stecher... or forgo the Boro signing all-together to keep Stecher.

2020 Off-season v 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kobeottosen</b></div><div>Why would you sign gudas if he's a 7-8 d</div></div>
Depth. This past season he's been relegated to a healthy scratch the odd night... I'd use him more as a 6-7 D with Benn coming in and out from time to time. Probably should've put Gudas above Benn on the chart. Also a decent insurance policy if they don't like what they get out of Juolevi, or for the eventual Edler & Tanev injuries.
Of course this only works if Gudas takes a pay cut... imo it's only worth it in this scenario if he signs for this much.. if not go re-sign Fantenberg or something in that price range

True about the bad contract... but after essentially a lost season and at best a flat cap, pretty sure UFA prices will be a bit more conservative

Build Around Pettersson
Panarin is probably a huge long shot... But in this scenario I'd target a big name compliment to go along with Pettersson and Boeser. Best bet for continued success in Vancouver is to try for success while Pettersson is still on his entry level contract without emptying the cupboards so-to-speak.
The current crop of young guys are ready to make the jump. It's time to bring in the right pieces to compliment them and help push them to the next level.

Unless CBJ locks Werenski up, I'd like to see an offer sheet sent his way then. Vancouver is in a position to overpay for a Dman of his age and value. Unless they can land one of larger ticket UFA Dmen. But then again they don't get the age advantage.

probably right it will take more... but given their depth at D and lack of picks and departures of some scoring I don't think they could demand Hughes. I would say Virtanen.

I'd say give him a 2 year deal. .. Granted I'd agree with you, probably for less money. At least on a 2 yr contract he's here to be a 1A/1B situation as Demko hopefully takes the reigns.

Diffrent take
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Styled</b></div><div>Adding vets Green and Williams for next year allows the young guys to play a spot lower and learn. The folowing year Greens 6 mill, Fayne 3.6 mill, Williams 3.4 mill, Letestu 1.8 mill, Korpikoski 1mill all come off books. Leaving 15+ to sign CMD, Maroon and some bridge contracts.</div></div>
I like the moves from an Edmonton perspective. Although I think the trade with FLA is a tough sell for them. To be honest though I haven't looked Florida much and not sure how deep they are at centre. If they have an abundance then maybe they make that move. Adding Green is decent, much like how they added Russell for this season... veteran presence is important. If that didn't work out any number of guys could plug-in there. One could argue maybe even by signing a UFA veteran to a 1 or 2 year deal for less than Green.
Not sure what the consensus is on Brossoit, but given how hard they leaned on Talbot all season I get the impression the coaching staff would like a new supporting cast in that #2 spot. I've long been suggesting that VAN re-sign Miller, and deal Markstrom to EDM for a mid-late round pick and a prospect.

Right about the Stone thing... but I wouldn't worry about all the RFA's for the following season. A decent hockey trade mid-season that sends RNH away for a decent centre on an expiring contract, or a trade at the draft would solve the cap problems and allow them to sign McDavid with ease.
My worry is Brossoit enough of backup for Talbot during a long season.

this coming summer
Biggest positive for the Sharks the past decade has been the ability to re-tool on the fly and not allow loyalty to hold progress back. ie. Cheechoo, Heatley, Clowe, Setoguchi, etc. etc.
They need to walk a fine line in keeping the core together but not being too nostalgic. Lived this story with the Canucks in the post-2011 years. Although, you still have room for 2 more players so it would be interesting to see what young prospects slot in there to help takeover. Jones still in his prime... he should get an extension, and then move Dell for a decent prospect and the success should be sustained going forward.
All in all given the rest of the roster and the likely willingness of Marleau and Thornton to comeback, even if in a reduced role... this team could be dangerous yet again!
