Why would Boston give up on a young controllable asset for spare parts? If the Leafs want Carlo in order to start the conversation it is going to have to be Kapanen or Johnsson.

My guess is Tkachuk is going to wait for Marner to come in before he signs anything. I will agree though some of these contracts are getting outrageous based on cap space.
I like Auston Matthews and all but he has the 6th highest percentage of cap in the NHL. He isn't even the best center on his own team!

He'd be a one year rental there. And no way in hell Holland gives up RNH for one year of Trouba.</div></div>
I do wanna bet, he is a RFA. He literally has no say over where he goes. He can sit out a year if he doesn't want to sign, sit home and get paid nothing and not accrue a year which would then leave him with another RFA year remaining until he is 27. The only thing he has say in is how long he signs for which maybe only for a year if they can't sell him on Edmonton. So unless you are suggesting Trouba is going to go nuclear, pass on 10+ million dollars by sitting on the couch the next two seasons until he turns 27 (which isn't going to happen), yeah I do wanna bet!

Buffalo Sabres signed Casey Fitzgerald (2 Years / $925,000 AAV)
Excited to see what he has but I would temper expectations, very few of these guys that ended up staying in college for 3+ years pan out to much more than bottom 6 fowards or bottom 2 d pairing guys.

Panarin isn't signing in Buffalo (although they could use him badly). I would be interested in having Meyers back but that money is too high for that term. It he wants 5 years I would want to be closer to $5,000,00 per, if he is stuck on $6,000,000 than I would want a shorter term, like 3 years.
That Edmonton trade is interesting to me. I am not sure Edmonton is interested in moving on from Draisaitl but with that type of return I am sure it would be hard for them to pass on. As a Sabres fan I am not really that interested in Draisaitl enough to the point where I would want to part with all of those assets.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>C'mon the Sens aren't giving up picks for a player not to play</div></div>
They are likely going to need to get to the floor. The NHL and it’s franchises are a business. The Sens owner has shown I.e. Gaborik & Boedker that he likes these high cap hit , less cash contracts and Hossa’s is that ten fold. To most teams Hossa and his contract have zero value. To teams like the Sens, Yotes, Canes and others that pinch pennies, his contract is valuable.
There is two more years left on Hossa’s deal carrying a $5,275,000 cap hit per year with only $1,000,000 per year owed. That is $8,500,000 in cash savings by having that contract vs someone else. I am not saying for sure they would give up the second but I would pressure them and see if they fold. Guarantee they would give up a 3rd.

They don't have to put him on LTIR, i.e. Gaborik. That is the value, a cheap owner can leave Hossa on just regular IR and he will count against their cap while only having to pay his salary.

Everything is aligning for Carolina this year, I would guarantee they come back down to earth next year. Too many guys (not young guys) having career years. Montreal has virtually the same team and has jumped from 71 points last year to 88 with 6 games to go. My guess is they regress closer to the mean. Florida could be better but both wildcard slots should be open and Buffalo should have a shot at it if they can take steps forward.

If I was the Yotes I'd demand a good prospect from the Seas, they have so many picks they basically got Hossa for free.</div></div>
I agree if I were the Yotes I would demand a 2nd rounder for that Hossa contract. For a cheap owner that is going to need to get to the floor a $5,275,000 cap hit for just $1,000,000 of cash it a big asset! I would bet he will cave and give up the 2nd rounder, that is a huge cash savings over the next 3 years.

I think if the guys I mentioned, Mittelstadt, Nylander and Ullmark take steps forward than yes I do think they are a wildcard team. I would expect Columbus, Carolina and Montreal to all come back down to earth or take a step back next year. That should leave the door open for Buffalo.

There was suppose to be ???? at the end of that. You realistically can't turn over an entire roster over one offseason.
I think the Sabres are going to make every effort to sign Skinner. Everything I read suggest they want him and he wants to be there. Sounds like money is the issue but they are in the ballpark. If the Sabres are going to take a step forward Mittelstadt, Nylander and Ullmark have to be the guys leading that charge.
They had a stretch where they played well. They just don't have the depth to sustain it.

Connor is a better all around player than Laine,</div></div>
I don't think anyone is suggesting Risto is some amazing d man but he is a capable 3rd-4th d-man, right handed shot with therm that is relatively team friendly which is currently an asset that is demanding a premium. I like Kyle Connor alot too but that trade above is a comparable package to the one Ottawa just got for Mark Stone, Kyle Connor isn't Mark Stone and won't get that type of return!

I could see Ottawa taking on Sobotka but zero change they take on Bogosian. Zach's $5,100,000 cap hit has a $6,000,000 in actual dollars owed on it. There is no way Melynk would let Ottawa take that on, he wants Gaborik and Boedker type contracts where the actual salary is far less than the cap hit.

For a young Right Shot D-man with term, a 1st and a 2nd? Buffalo would be the one not willing to do that deal. Winnipeg couldn't get that trade into the league office fast enough.
I could be wrong but I don't think that Ryan Callahan contract is going to be hard to move if TB wants too. First off if they want out from under it they can buy him out and it would only be a $1,551,000 cap hit for 2019-2020 & 2020-2021. If they want the contract clean off the books (remember he has a Modified NTC, 16 team list) I would think several teams with space will have interest in adding him on the cheap because of the gap in cap space vs actual salary (Carolina rings a big bell). Obviously Ottawa would really want that contract but I don't see him agreeing to got there. Arizona and Carolina though seems like teams that would be interested.
