Why would tampa throw in 2 key roster pieces in order to dump Callahan? if that's the price for getting rid of 1 year of callahan they are better off buying him out.

For a young Right Shot D-man with term, a 1st and a 2nd? Buffalo would be the one not willing to do that deal. Winnipeg couldn't get that trade into the league office fast enough.

I could be wrong but I don't think that Ryan Callahan contract is going to be hard to move if TB wants too. First off if they want out from under it they can buy him out and it would only be a $1,551,000 cap hit for 2019-2020 & 2020-2021. If they want the contract clean off the books (remember he has a Modified NTC, 16 team list) I would think several teams with space will have interest in adding him on the cheap because of the gap in cap space vs actual salary (Carolina rings a big bell). Obviously Ottawa would really want that contract but I don't see him agreeing to got there. Arizona and Carolina though seems like teams that would be interested.

Also i think TB will weigh the value of simply trading good players for fair value returns instead. Example: rather than have to sweeten a trade to get rid of Callahan, simply decide to trade Gourde and/or maybe Miller. That way they'll:

    - Clear enough cap space to sign everyone
    - They'll receive full value for the two guys they are trading away in the form of no cap prospects and picks
    - Callahan's contract will run out naturally
    - TB will have oodles of replacements for Gourde and Miller
    - They'll keep the real core of the team intact
    - They'll still be good enough to compete for a cup regardless

If they are proactive about it, they'll be in a less tough position then people think. Waiting too last minute however will screw them so they would have to act quick, like right after they win the cup, quick.

Risto is not worth that, even being right handed and having term. The guy has the raw ability but has zero hockey sense and you can't teach that - major liability, he just isn't good. Buffalo fans need to come to terms with that, and I think they have because every Buffalo trade on here has him going out the door...

Connor is a better all around player than Laine,

I don't think anyone is suggesting Risto is some amazing d man but he is a capable 3rd-4th d-man, right handed shot with therm that is relatively team friendly which is currently an asset that is demanding a premium. I like Kyle Connor alot too but that trade above is a comparable package to the one Ottawa just got for Mark Stone, Kyle Connor isn't Mark Stone and won't get that type of return!

Ristolainen sucks, no point for the Jets to give up Connor for him.

I didn't know 40 pt right shot d man fall out of the sky in the NHL! The deal OP posted was not Risto for Connor so I am not sure what you want me to say about your made up deal.
