TOR/EDM trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arousedcat</b></div><div>I think if the Wild are seriously considering moving Staal, it's for a player like Nylander. A young offensive right shot C/RW is what we need. Staal alone wouldn't be enough for Nylander, but what about some sort of package centered around Staal for Nylander?</div></div>
Just as an outsider, it would probably be Staal and 2018 1st (maybe even something else) for Nylander. Staal had a great year, but I think the Leafs could look at other options for a a veteran center that wouldn't cost them Nylander. Leafs need an impact RHD, so if Wild built deal around Spurgeon or 1 for 1 swap with Dumba, Leafs would be enticed. The Wild have every right to ask for a player like Nylander in return for Staal, that just tells me as an outsider that Staal won't be traded.

Staal would be a great fit in Tor. Just not at the cost of Nylander or Liligren. Maybe 2018 1st plus a prospect?

Would DALLAS Do It??
Yeah I understand wanting Heiskanen for Kessel, and I wouldn't really want anything else from him from a Pitt point of view, but DAL just isn't really in a position to trade it's top prospect in years for Kessel. I think with the new coach and new style, it wouldn't be a great fit for Phil. I think if a trade between these two involving Phil was to go down this is what it would look like, but I just don't think these two teams are great trading partners.

solving the cap issue
It could work for DAL (I wouldn't do it personally), but the only way it makes sense is if they land iTavares in a sign and trade before the draft, otherwise they don't need that much cap space this year.

Thread:
How about this? (Pacioretty to Dallas)
From the 1st trade scenario on, the only conclusion I got from that article is that patches won't be traded. I understand the asking price is high, and there's nothing wrong with that, but almost all of those trade scenarios don't make those teams better off. From 2nd overall, to high first round picks plus teams top prospects, none of them seem feasible.
In DAL's case, that's a lot of value to give up it's number 2 prospect plus 13th overall for patches. If patches was extended at a team friendly deal (which he won't), it isn't terrible, but DAL lacks center depth so giving up it's top center prospect and an opportunity at 13 to grab another seems difficult.
I think in DAL's case they would have to wait until the TDL to make a move on patches.

A reasonably large hockey trade
It is a big trade, and giving up 3rd overall and patches is a lot, but breaking it down I don't think DAL is better off for it. They are not that loaded on D-prospects/players, so they're not really in a situation to give up Heiskanen. Given DAL's lack of depth at center, I think it would do more harm than good for DAL to give up Faksa for Patches. Even saying a 1 for 1 swap, and swapping Heiskanen for 3rd overall, DAL still has to give up pick 13 this year which they desperatley need. It's a big trade, and a great idea, but I just don't think DAL would be able to do it.

Kessel to Dallas
DAL is a fit but I don't think they'll be good trading partners. DAL isn't really in a position to give up 3 NHL players for Kessel, so not sure a deal could work out.

Spezza
DAL doesn't really need Stolarz in that trade. Nuevirth would be a good backup, so maybe him for Spezza straight up? Or Spezza for the pick? Or DAL sends a 4th for Neuvirth?

Fixing Fletcher's (and Leipold's) mess. Caps and Oiler trades.
I think the trade is just too big. People are always going to debate the value, but when you look at it from Edmonton's side, they are giving up their top pairing RHD, guy with a ton of potential in Puljujärvi, Yamamoto who is top prospect with Puljujarvi in the NHL, and a 2nd round pick for a different and more expesnive RHD (who obviously has a different skillset), a different, more established, more expensive winger (coming off a career year), and a goalie who would be an upgrade, but doesn't really fit a need for them. When you just look at the deal, it's not overly eye catching for EDM. Zucker is a decent fit because he's speedy and could keep up well with McDavid, but he is also going to be looking at 5+ mil a year after a career year. I think if MN swapped out Dumba for Spurgeon, it would make Edmonton stop and think through it.
I'm not sure if EDM would be able to do the deal with it's current cap just like this, much less attempting to sign Strome and Nurse after.
Again, I think it's just too big of a trade. Spurgeon would be a good fit in Edmonton. Zucker would be a good fit in Edmonton. Puljujarvi would be a fresh power forward that MN needs. It just looks weird with everyone included and I think a smaller deal makes sense.

Trade with Tampa and Toronto
Yeah the ideas of both of these trades are great. Would love a guy like TJ on DAL, but can understand if TB wouldn't want to give him up. That Spezza deal makes a lot of sense. Instead of investing multiple years in a 3rd line center like Bozak/Riley Nash, they get one year of a veteran Spezza who is going to be playing for one last contract. Whether or not people think value is fair on trades, this team/post is one that fits needs and makes a lot of sense for all parties involved.

Maybe we could throw in Hintz, Tufte, and a 2019 1st along with Heiskanen and the rest of the package? Throw in Honka too? So final offer is Heiskanen, Lindell, Honka, Janmark, Dickinson, 2018 1st, 2019 1st, 2019 2nd for Kessel? DAL might still have to add.

Everything from DAL people is that he is going to resign. He will probably wait until after Tavares gets his new contract to figure out what he wants to ask for.
It would take a catastrophic season for him to consider leaving. Plus they have been planning the cap around him. Interesting idea though.

Probably a way to repair the roster
I don't think this makes DAL better off. The idea of Hanzal and Kesler makes sense, but two extra years of Kesler at that cap hit is a lot for DAL to take on, especially at the cost of Lindell. Not sure if there is a different piece ANA would want, but not sure this deal gets done with Lindell.

I like that trade for DAL. Is Rask the one the Canes want to get rid of the most? DAL is looking for a good 2nd/3rd line center, and that's a pretty decent return for CAR and they shed 4 mil off the books. I like the trade!

Nichushkin Return, VAN trade
Would this make DAL better? DAL has many needs, but is RHD the biggest one? You still haven't signed Stephen Johns, so he could be traded in this scenario. Tanev would be a nice addition, but at the cost of a 2018 1st and Gurianov, and a 2nd?
Nilsson would be a good backup, but I can't imagine he's part of VAN's long term plan, so it's not a big deal for them to give him up. With guys like Nuevirth available, and a good backup goalie free agent class, there's not a big need for DAL to trade for Nilsson. DAL won't trade Spezza as a cap dump, which they don't view him as.
With a package of a 2018 1st, 2019 2nd, and Gurianov, I would rather throw another piece in and go after O'Reilly and keep Johns instead of Tanev.
I just feel as a DAL I just don't feel like the team is better off.

Hanzal LTIR + O'Reilly
I think any trade with DAL and O'Reily starts with this year's first rounder. Then, Buf will want a top prospect/NHL player, then another high pick or prospect after that. They will probably ask for more after that.
2018 1st, Gurianov, Dickinson, and a 3rd rounder is probably the kind of return BUF will want. It wouldn't make sense for DAL to do this, but I imagine a trade for O'Reily would look something like that.

Dallas and Carolina Trade
I think the Spezza deal makes more sense than people will think. DAL won't trade him as a cap dump (which he really isn't, he's just overpaid a bit, which a lot of guys in the NHL are), and people forget that he had 50 points in 68 games the season prior to this last one. He isn't what he used to be, obviously, but in TOR's case they get a veteran 3rd line center that they have to pay for 1 year that they have the cap space for. They use him for one year instead of investing 3-5 years in Riley Nash or Bozak and have more money after this year to sign Matthews, Marner, etc. Especially if Carrick isn't part of the future plans in TOR, him and a 3rd round pick isn't a huge price to pay. I think the idea is good!
