Do People Overvalue Eichel
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sabres_Insider</b></div><div>Eichel is a 24 year old top 10 centre. I know NYR won’t give up Laf. But if their not willing to give up Kakko, I am more than happy with eichel staying in Buffalo

The problem with this analysis is that it doesn't take into account whether Eichel is more than happy to stay in Buffalo. Obviously this isn't out for certain yet and all is just a rumor, but all signs seem to point to him not being happy in Buffalo. NYR can put the most competitive package together for Eichel without including Laf, Kakko, Miller, Fox, or Nils (unless LAK is willing to give up Turcotte or Byfield - they're probably not).
Really not sure how Chytil + Strome/Buch + Schneider + Kravstov + 2021 1st doesn't get the job done here. That is a MASSIVE package for Eichel. Considering not all teams can even acquire a $10m cap hit right now, and NYR can with relative ease after this season ends (even w/o removing Strome's last year from their books), I don't see how BUF turns down this deal for an unhappy Eichel if they are intent on trading him. Good luck putting together a better package from other prospective, realistic trade partners.

Then they trade RNH. Draisaitl has two 70+ point seasons under his belt. He had more points than Stone last year and is 4 years younger. This trade is incredibly one sided in Ottawa's favor. I like RNH for Stone straight up. Helps both teams. But Drai and a 2nd for a Stone? That's insulting.

I don't necessarily disagree with you - but it's been a hot discussion on rangers twitter as Chiarelli (sp?) has made it quite clear that they're willing to part with their #10 overall pick to bolster the blueline. There also is value in shedding Staal's contract, and if Skjei has to fall on a sword to make that happen, AND the rangers get Zadina in the process, I think I'm 60/40 in favor. Is this realistic? Likely not. But it's certainly intriguing.

People are throwing Skjei for EDM's 10th overall, so a 3rd for 9th swap plus Skjei and also Montrael eating Staal's contract is an intriguing offer. As a NYR fan, while sad to see Skjei go in this deal, I don't hate it.

Rangers de New York
WHY on earth would anyone pay Vanek $7 million? He hasn't been worth anything close to that in years. Also I don't think this team is in the market for late-twenties wingers and dropping $42 million on them (JVR). Spooner isn't worth $5 million a year. Skjei makes north of $4.5 million easily. Nelson trade makes no sense!
Chytil and Anderson don't make the team out of camp?

Carlson is making more than $7 million a year. It would be shocking if he gets less than $8.5. Also, unless it's a sign and trade, NYI cannot sign him to an 8 year deal - max 7 years.

Rebuild D and trade up
This team would be a dream. I think if you give up Zucc instead of Vesey, it's more realistic but still unlikely that the trade with Edmonton happens. Additionally, for Dougie, make that 3rd rounder the #39 overall and it's also fairer but still probably unlikely to happen. Don't hate the JVR deal either, if it's only a 4 year term. Lastly, swap Staal for Smith and we got quite the squad.

So no trade. If you want Hamilton, come up with a trade proposal that does that. Even if Zuch was a good fit, it would be for one year, so its not a good fit, just a rental fit. When trading for a 24 year old elite right handed defenceman on a great contract, remember that the trade needs to line up in both talent, cap implications and length! Its like the Panarin deals Columbus fans want. Yes, he is great. No, he is not fetching an unbelievable return, because he only has one year left.</div></div>
Fair enough. Thanks for your input, much appreciated!

The forward version of Hamilton would be an elite right winger. Nobody is giving up an elite forward, plus two high picks, and a young RFA for Hamilton. That would be, I think, madness. I get that Zucc might not get it done, but he saves them cap and has averaged 56 points a year the last 5 years. Put him on a line with Johnny Hockey and Monahan and he could give them exactly what they've been missing on the right side.

Cap trade plus latest draft projection
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Rangere fans totally overestimate the value of Namestnikov, and really the one year rental of Zuccarello.</div></div>
Disagree. Namestnikov is a solid middle-six winger who someone can get on a pretty light contract (4 years 3.5 mil/per-ish). Definitely worth a pair of second round picks (Lars Eller netted two second rounders a few years ago). Zucc has averaged 56 points a year over the last five seasons with non-superstar linemates and has a favorable contract for teams that need a top-6 winger position filled. Those players routinely net first round picks at the deadline. Having that kind of player for a full year is surely worth a first round pick.

As has been pointed out to me by others in these Armchair GM threads, Buffalo doesn't have to trade ROR. Also I've not read that they are shopping him, and only that they're listening to offers. Therefore Brodie for ROR straight up is declined immediately by Buffalo. ROR deserves a nice return but the package above would be highway robbery.
The Hoffman situation is rough, so I agree with you there. Maybe one of the guys and a 6th round pick or something. Not sure how much the drama devalues him, because he's more than capable of putting up 35+ goals on a solid line.

Quite the haul for Ryan O'Reilly. He's a great player, but I think that's giving up too much for him. Also with Ottawa clearly shopping Hoffman, I again don't think Calgary would need to give up so much for him. Not sure Hoffman is worth both guys and the first round pick. Curious to hear what others think.

Realistic 2018-2019
The trade with the Oilers is bad - NYR shouldn't give up a good d-man who had a bad year under a coach that wouldn't change the defensive scheme even if the players were literally on fire. Taking on Lucic's contract should return MUCH more than swapping third round picks.
I like the Buffalo deal but I don't think they'll retain that much of his contract - maybe $1mil, if at all.
Unsure if Calgary would accept that trade - also from the NYR standpoint I'm reluctant to trade Ronning before we see what the kid can do at higher levels. I know it's only the WHL, but 60+ goals is impressive for anyone. He could be a top six forward and he could crack the roster as early as 2019 depending on how he develops the next 12 months.
Big fan of the Hayes and Skjei deals. If NYR can get close to what you have here, I'd consider it a win.
