I absolutely agree with that assessment. I would much rather see a top line of Giroux centering Weal and Simmonds, and a 2nd line of Couturier centering Konecny and Voracek.

Understandable. That's a common misconception. Whether a player is on a one-way or two-way contract has no bearing on their waiver eligibility. It has to do with the amount of games played in the NHL and the number of years they have had a contract for.

Thread:
Markov?
Definitely like the idea of moving Read and burying MacDonald rather than buying out MacDonald. I am concerned that this puts us right up against the cap ceiling, with no wiggle room. I think if he was willing to sign a 1-year deal for maybe $5-5.5 mil, that Hextall would consider it. The problem is that he seems dead set on a minimum of 2 years and a minimum of $6 mil. Not that he does or doesn't deserve that money, it's just the Flyers are not in a good financial spot to take that on right now. I'm not sure why a younger team with cap space isn't interested in him.

Flyers (Cap space left for Markov)
There's cap space left for Markov with a buyout, but not only does it put us up against the cap with no wiggle room, it is a buyout that will last for about 6 years. For 6 years, we will have $1.58 million dollars invested in something that we cannot use. Or for 3 years, we can have $5 million invested in something we may occasionally use. It's a tricky decision. I think we should try to fight through as many years of MacDonald as we are able to to reduce that buyout time. Thankfully, because of the amount of young talent that we have on ELC's, we are capable of waiting it out a bit longer. Could also bury him in the minors to save about $1 mil on cap space (no one will claim him off waivers, and if they do, good riddance). I think we should maybe stay away from Markov, strictly because of the need to buyout MacDonald, but also a bit of it is staying away from a 38 year-old defenseman looking for $6 mil a season. However, I will concede that he played well in recent years, and the idea of Provorov getting to play with one of the most admirable fellow Russian d-man would be cool.

WHY TRADE SCHENN
This is a fairly realistic lineup at what we could see next year. Just a couple of thoughts:
• Brayden Schenn was traded for a worse player in Jori Lehtera, no doubt. However, we did net two 1st round draft picks as well. To be honest, it's quite a fair value for Schenn, and Lehtera has 1 year less on his contract.
• Stolarz will probably be the Phantoms' starter, and Bernier would probably take no less than $2.5AAV on a 2-year deal.
• Jordan Weal will probably get a 3-year deal worth $1.75AAV
• In my opinion, the Flyers should look to trade Matt Read for a 3rd round pick if they can get it, if not a 4th round pick. There's a bit of log jam now within the forward group, and I think Vecchione could play wing. It would also save them some cap space Oskar Lindblom will almost certainly be a bottom 6 forward, not a top 6 forward, especially in his first season here. Though his ability in front of the net may earn him a Schenn-replacement spot on the PP1.
• I feel the Flyers have surplus of left-handed defensemen. If they could dump some salary somehow, I think they should go after a reasonably priced right-handed defensemen via free agency or pursue one in a trade.

IF the pick is traded...
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AK_tune</b></div><div>Ha. Vegas would be completely insane to take that deal - #2 overall isn't Eichel/Laine, it's Nolan Patrick. Not sure if he has two first names or two last names.</div></div>
Agreed, they would be, I was simply trying to point out that the only way I would trade the #2 overall pick, if I were managing the Flyers, would be for extreme overpayment as this is. It offers the Flyers 3 first round draft choices and huge amounts of cap relief, particularly Andrew MacDonald being removed from the books.

Thread:
IF the pick is traded...
To be clear, they are not giving them for nothing in return. It is meant to be part of an overall trade of:
Marchessault, Mrazek, #6, #15, #24
in exchange for
#2 (Nico or Nolan), Andrew MacDonald, Matt Read, and Michael Neuvirth
Again, I have admitted in the description it is unlikely they would ever consider this. But if I were the Flyers, the only way I would consider giving up the pick is for significant overpayment like this. That's all I was trying to say. This is not meant to be a scenario that may happen. I believe the Flyers will (and should) keep their #2 pick.
