Call the season off
Yep.
I would wanna see Holtz in the top 6 though with Toffoli gone. Also I honestly think Smith could return a 3rd with retention, guy with size and willing fight on a cheap expiring contract might be more tempting with some bigger teams in the playoffs.

Vanecek: -0.372 GSAx/60, -0.007 SV%Ax, -1.86 Wins Above Replacement, 74th of 75 goalies to play 5+ NHL games this season (not an NHL goalie at the moment)
Elvis : +0.047 GSAx/60, +0.001 SV%Ax, 0.22 Wins Above Replacement, 39th of 75 goalies to play 5+ NHL games this season (the definition of a league-average goalie at the moment)
Elvis is an overpaid fringe starter/backup whose inconsistencies probably improve on a better team. Vanecek is statistically unplayable right now.
Goalies don't tend to have a lot of trade value, so I think you could get Columbus to retain up to $1M on Elvis with the deal here. Even with that, I think Columbus accepts.

I think both teams decline. Also, why trade Dougie anyway? He was on pace for another 65-70 point season and he'll be a very good 2nd pair defenseman next year.
Sure the Devils can use another d-man, but they really need to prioritize goaltending.

1 more year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jojoyutz</b></div><div>I wish I had your confidence</div></div>
If we had the goaltending last year, we would have been just outside the conversation. And we are bound to improve simply by getting older, and hopefully healthy.
There are only so many playmakers and puck-rushers a team can have. And our transition game was already among the league’s best.
Now we have a little improvements in areas we need to work on: winning the puck in corners, mixing it up near the crease (ours and theirs), blocking shots from point, getting the PP organized with good coaching, And over next two years, we are going to have a parade of elite young talent coming up through the ranks (Holtz, Luke, Mukhamadullin, Nemec, Gritsyuk). And lastly, we have no dead weight on books and great cap position.
There is a lot to be optimistic about.

He has had some pretty soft goals mixed in with some routine performance.

what to do next year
Mukhamadullin wasn't supposed to arrive next year, his loan is extended through next season.
But who knows what happens next...there could be movement away from KHL.
(if that is the case, bring us Gritsyuk too!)
I think that 3LD spot would probably be up for competition between Bahl, Okhotiuk, White (if Smith is dealt).
The 3RD spot would be between Walsh, the guys from 3LD list, and maybe short-term free agent.
Luke Hughes then arrives after Michigan season (so ~ April 2023)
Plausible plan. Good stuff.

Bernier on LTIR
Washington declines. Samsonov has great potential and despite the popular narrative has been pretty decent. Trading him and picks for Zacha (who I personally don't see a lot of long term value in for DC, seems like a guy that is gone in a year or two with not much impact), and Smith(who I get has potential, but from my view he's had a pretty bad sophomore slump, which always worries me), is value that Washington shouldn't consider. And also, this leaves Washington with only one goalie, and makes them lose the guy with far more potential in net.

VAN - Zacha, Walsh, 1st is probably a step beyond what it takes for Boeser without a contract. Maybe if he agreed to extend before hand. Even then...would take me a while to get comfortable with that package.
EDM - zero reason to trade Ty Smith for a pick. He should only move if its getting us a better d-man. Odds are against us that that pick will become what Ty Smith could become.
NSH - Carrier is a good d-man, and I'd be on board for paying up for him. But Sharangovich will be a regular 25-goal winger. Believe in him.
SJS - Sadly, Kuok hasn't developed this year as much as we had hoped. So asking a 4th sounds about right. I'd rather just keep him (not my money).
BOS - I think we could do better with Johnsson in off-season. At deadline, $3.4m may drag his return.

Wingers are not the answer
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jojoyutz</b></div><div>No, offense is an issue, but not for hughes's wing. Hughes has Bratt, they are fine, but nico needs a winger. Zacha has really proven that he cannot be that guy and unfortunatly he will probably always be a raw talent that cant turn it into nhl success for his whole career. I truly believe nico will find a whole new gear on offense with a good line. He has so much skill and makes great plays every night but has no help from his current linemates.
I agree with you about the goaltending. We need someone to push Blackwood, we dont have that right now. Let him get healthy, get another good young goaltender and have them battle for the top spot.
We have 2 solid d-pairs. Graves-Hamilton is very good, and should be the top pair for a while in New Jersey. Seigenthaler-Severson has worked really well too, it lets Severson play his game and Seigenthaler provides great protection when damon makes mistakes. So we have a solid top 4, but after that it is just a dumpster fire. I personally see nothing in Ty Smith. Hes slow, cant defend and really doesnt provide much offense. Trade him while he has value. We have some strong LD in the pipeline with Mukhamadulin and Hughes, one of wich should be ready next year to fill out that side. On the right side we have nothing in the pipeline. We need to get someone who is sound defensivley to play in that spot.</div></div>
I share the frustration on Zacha. It’s a bad slump, but he has been streaky his whole career. Especially for a guy who is 6’3” 215 lbs who should at least use his size when his stick isn’t working. But my issue with wingers generally is that the market is always flush with them. And scoring is so much more than a wicked shot. If Miles Wood returns to form, Bratt, Sharangovich continue, Zacha picks up a bit, Holtz, Mercer, Foote Thompson develop, we will have options. Right now, as a team, we are creating the 10th most high-danger chances (as the youngest team). The goals will come.
As for our Def, I agree on top-4. I am not as sour on Ty Smith’s season…at least not defensively. Hard to tell offensively since he is used so differently. He was really bad in his first 10 games, was kind of up and down a bit, and I think he has been better recently.
Mukhamadullin and Hughes both play RD almost exclusively, so I am not worried about the L/R thing (devils had six LHD in 1995). Rielly Walsh and Case McCarthy are both solid prospects on right side as well. Walsh gets pinned as only an offensive d-man and that hasn’t really been the case in AHL. He has the highest Corsi % on team and really hasn’t been a liability defensively. McCarthy has been good too at BU. Could be good partner for Smith someday. Has had success playing with offensive LD’s Fensore, Farrance, York. And lastly, Bahl and Okhotiuk have both played some RD.
If we had average goaltending, our goal differential would be close to 0. Maybe it doesn’t put us in playoffs, but keeps us playing meaningful games.

Two really good points you brought up regarding Zacha and Hischier.
Think one of the main points of this AGM is that Devils don't need to go out and acquire a big name winger.
Holtz can be the guy Debrincat is today, and what some of us hoped Zacha would be.
And there's plenty of other wingers who I think will take on big roles from next season and onward (Stillman, Gritsyuk, Clarke etc).
A lot of us Devils fans are rightfully frustrated that this season is like the two previous ones a complete wash, but the guys in the front office are building something here.
I'm quite excited about the future for the Devils.

I think Severson may be just outside of our targeted age range. Mercer would be the most attractive piece for the Canucks but that's probably a no go. I'm not sure what Clarke's value is but he would probably be a good addition to a deal.
I think Garland for a 1st 2023 (top-5 protected) + Clarke would be a workable structure.

I like the trades here.
Though I'd prefer not to send Clarke to Vancouver along with that top 40ova pick and Smith who's still got a ton of potential.
I think the value's there for Garland with those two pieces.
You're retaining on one too many guys here as well, maximum is three.
I'd suggest upping the retention on Tatar to 2.25m and removing retention on Zacha, as PK would likely have to be retained in having any chance in moving him at all.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oilersfan150</b></div><div>Oilers reject imo thats a very high price to pay even with retention take out petrov and replace lavoie with a lower value asset and the oilers accept.</div></div>
Thing is that Tatar is retained not only this year but the next one as well, as such I think value in the trade is roughly fair.
I guess it could be made more palpable if EDM were to send Turris cap to NJD as well, if he's valued as a negative asset.
I like Lavoie but his projection has dropped of a fair bit in the last season. OP did put two winger prospects going back to NJD so it wouldn't be unreasonable to swap Petrov with Konovalov (G) or Samorukov (LHD) instead.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikeg93</b></div><div>After watching the game last night and not seeing much Subban of late - he's really fallen off. Not noticeable, not worth the contract, and probably doesn't make the Leafs any better. Maybe he's more reliable right now than Liljegren but honestly, is he better than Holl and I'm not saying Holl is Cale Makar?</div></div>
I think PK'd be a slight improvement on Holl, and defensive depth for an extended cup run can't hurt.
I think the trade could be improved if TOR were to send Ritchie to NJD instead along with that pick as it clears more cap.

JVR at $3.5 million is probably worth the risk considering he fills a need (big-body-soft-hands-type to play in front of the net, tip shots, clean up rebounds and screen goalie).
His skill-set is also what we hope for Nolan Foote, so possibly mentor role there.
If Philly would do it for a lesser pick, even better.
