dude nope. Marner has better production playing with worse players for most, if not all of his career. Also a strong penalty killer

What is this in response to? Not giving up Marner for C level prospects and a late 1st or 2 seconds? Not giving Kapanen for a bottom pairing D and a 4th?

no leafs fan has ever said that. Guentzel is very good, on the Nylander tier of wingers. He might even be a bit better

Nope. We just want fair value for our 94 point 22 year old superstar, that's pretty much all.

Thread:
EichelMatthews
Keep in mind being the only major star on his team, he's the guy that gets the puck every single time. He also plays with good players- olofsson and reinhart are no snubs. Matthews only started playing with Marner in like December, and otherwise only played like one game with him. His line mates have been
2016-17 (rookie year)
Rookie Hyman
Half of the time Rookie Brown
Half of the Rookie Nylander
Not bad per se, but not exactly the best line to work with, especially given that they were all rookies
2017-18
2nd year Hyman
2nd year Nylander
Pretty good, but is it better than reinhart/good skinner?
2018-19
Kapanen (until Nylander came back)
Johnsson
Awful post contract strike Nylander
Not terrible players, but nothing to envy. Eichel was playing with 40g skinner
2019-20
It gets pretty good here obviously.
In terms of defensemen, don't forget that muzzin and barrie are new additions. For years he had to play with Rielly (great of course), Zaitsev (yikes), Hainsey (yikes), Gardiner (yikes when it matters most). The sabres also have good defensemen as well - dahlin and jokiharju are pretty darn good, as are montour, risto, miller, etc. Nearly as good a d depth as what we've got
My takeaway is that Matthews hasn't necessarily played with better players, but he makes the players that he plays with infinitely better. He had rookie Johnsson and rookie brown score 20 each, and the next year when they are taken off of his line, they play score half of that.
I also might add that Eichel is a year more experienced and should be better, but isn't. Goal scorers are also more rare than guys who rack up assists, and don't get me wrong, jack can score, but they are two different calibres of goal scorers.
Not trying to take away from Eichel- he's great, and really close- but he's not Matthews.

I didnt even mention the fact that their best defenseman played more then half the season injured. I didnt mention Barabanov or the fact the the leafs were a top 5 team in the NHL under Keefe. Did you actively try to ignore everything we know about aging curves to make this god awful, lazy post about the leafs getting worse instead of better? Someone would really have to try hard to be that short sighted and delusional to make a comment like that. Dear god

Kickstarting a retool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>csick</b></div><div>good luck improving. I think the current team will keep getting worse and not better</div></div>
Based off what exactly? That's right, delusion. Matthews, marner, nylander, kapanen, kerfoot, johnsson, mikheyev, engvall, sandin, liljegren and dermott are all getting better as they grow. Their weakest forward looks to be Jason Spezza who had 25 points in 58 games. Hes a 3rd liner on most teams but a 12th forward on the leafs.
They are replacing one of the worst defenseman in the nhl with Liljegren or Lehtonen. They will find someone better then barrie so they will also improve there. Campbell improves their goaltending significantly. Their main weakness this season was goaltending, Andersen was the reason they were behind Tampa bay. If Campbell was there on day one they would have been 2 or 3 points behind boston.
There isnt one thing that points to the leafs getting worse and to say they should retool is one of the stupidest things someone could ever say

LOL you didn't make any argument, all you said was that he has better metrics and couldn't even prove that with numbers. Fact is going into a playoff series in order to win the cup today, I'd take Crosby over McDavid, meaning he is better than McDavid today.

Yes, no doubt but Crosby’s metrics have fell too much to discount his offensive ability.</div></div>
Talk metrics all you want, watch the guy play. Does McDavid have a ridiculous amount of skill? definitely. He may end up having a better career than Crosby, but today Crosby is better and Crosby was ahead of him when he was at that age (Had a cup, art ross', Rocket Richard etc)

Don't disrespect Crosby like that. Still the overall best player in the league. Going into one playoff series and you had to choose Crosby or McDavid for this one series and can't keep either afterward who would u choose? Crosby

Byram for Kyle Connor - Should Colorado do it

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>leafsfanhere95</b></div><div>yes ik. Heinola is similar to Byram (not in skill). Why would they trade for him and give Connor?</div></div>
Byram is clearly better than Heinola. Whatever the case though, together they would make a very strong left side for Winnipeg going forward:
Byram ------ Pionk
Heinola ----
Morrisey ---
In the 2020 draft with picks #12 and #43 Winnipeg should be able to pick up a good RHD, such as Schneider, Niemela, Barron, Grans, or Cotton to name a few.
Either way this trade would definitely fast-track their re-tool into being a contender again, because right now they aren't close due to their D being weak.

Byram for Kyle Connor - Should Colorado do it
Here's the real answer: Does Colorado NEED Connor to win the cup? if yes, make the trade, if no then don't make it.
Colorado is good enough to potentially win a cup without this trade so sacrificing Byram to get Connor is just over kill. Keep your prospects, develop them, as they come up move out older players and keep the synergy of the team.
A team like Buffalo is in the right situation to sacrifice a young stud for a current one. They haven't made the playoffs in forever and need to get back in the playoffs asap. That makes sense for them. they don't have time to be patient. Colorado has all the time in the world. (Assuming Mack stays obviously)

Byram for Kyle Connor - Should Colorado do it
Her is my take. If Colorado wants to be the Tampa Bay Lightning of the next 4 years they make the move. If they have aspirations of being a dynasty they don’t. Connor undoubtedly makes them better immediately. When playoff teams luck into top 4 picks like the Avs did and get to add a talent like Byram and then hit another homerun in Newhook you don’t let that kind of talent escape especially considering the cap.

It’s more than just money. It’s money, living environment, how competitive the team is, Management/ ownership, the city and other things. Ottawa losses in almost all of those things

OVI WILL BE NUmber 1 goal scorer
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HattrickKane88</b></div><div>I’m not a Penguins fan, but I have to admit that Jake Guentzel is actually better than Alexander Ovechkin, by a lot. Ovechkin is a one dimensional player who’s only trick is to score one timers at the half wall. The vast majority of his goals come on the power play in which there’s no one marking him. He’s absolutely useless at even strength. He entirely relies on his teammates to set him up. Guentzel on the other hand, is one of the elite players at 5v5. A very high percentage of his points are earned at even strength, unlike Ovechkin. Guentzel is actually capable of driving the play and improving the play of his linemates, unlike Ovechkin. Also, Guentzel is 7th all time in playoff goals per game. He performs when it actually matters. Ovechkin has a long way to go before he reaches Guentzel’s level.</div></div>
