Rebuild due to boredom
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy12Bob</b></div><div>You've just exposed your ignorance of what's going on in Detroit.
Detroit have the best prospect pipeline in the entire league on LD with Edvinsson, Johansson, Wallinder, and others but they are bereft of RD prospects that are close to being ready. That is the reason for Yzerman signing stopgap players that are RD (or capable of playing that position). We now have 7 competent NHL defenders that are signed to deals that fit very well with the expected timeframe in which our prospects are expected to mature.
Detroit is not going to trade away Määttä for a 38 year old player. Määttä will be needed the next couple of years as 3rd pair or 7th D depending how quickly Edvinsson and Johansson develop. Ghost will be traded at the deadline and one of those two will get the nod to replace him. On the right side we have Petry signed for two years and Holl for three, that is the time it will take for Sandin Pellikka, Tuomisto, and Gibson to develop into players that can replace them.
The Detroit defense is very well crafted considering what talent we have in our prospect pool and the time it will take for them to become ready to step up.</div></div>
Exposed my ignorance of Detroit's defense...sure man, whatever floats your boat.
It's a fairly accurate statement that DET has been adding meh D-man for a good while now, to the point they have to place a $3M dollar player as a healthy scratch, and have no room at all for any of the youths you mentioned unless injuries happen.
You're reading too much into this trade. It's a 7th D swap between Suter and Määttä, neither one is a lock to make to the lineup. DET gets a 2nd for taking in a worse player, although they'd play the same role. That trade wouldn't change anything for their core.

The center they should go for

Perhaps.
My suggestion would be pulling a 2015 again. One year retool to stockpile on things.
That core is not good enough and I think they know it too. I would take the pending UFAs they have and turn them into prospect/draft capital later down the line and hope they fall into the bottom-10 - that way they can keep their 2024 1st and get a good prospect.
After that, full send on the UFA market to bring in a proper 1C for 2024-25, whether it's Lindholm, Scheifele, Stamkos...there's plenty of better options in there than there is now, and now that their core is renewing anyway with Bergeron/Krejci retiring they got time to build again.
Selling DeBrusk, Ullmark, Grzelcyk for draft capital could end up being extremely valuable for them, as long as they don't f*ck up with the drafting again, similar to how they did in 2015.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>V123</b></div><div>That is a good point. It could be anyone’s game in the central. If Boston really wanted him, I’m sure they would gladly overpay for Hayes to continue being good. If you were St.Louis, would you accept a 1st for Hayes?? Sure they need him but that’s a good offer. I don’t k wk just a thought</div></div>
Absolutely I would - what a great asset management would that be from STL GM, turning a 6th into a 1st.
Problem is though that BOS is not in position to move a first for a center like that, they already are missing their 2024 one after trading it for Bertuzzi, and the 2025 pick is also locked as conditional one on that trade. 2026 1st could be in play, but I'd be hesitant to move that quickly too, given Bruins prospect pool is pretty dreadful right now.
Bergeron and Krejci retiring drove them to a bit of a corner...

Would like Foudy to be added there given I also got the other Foudy - what should change for Foudy to remain in the trade

Who knows. The way DET has been acquiring meh D-men recently is just bonkers to me, Suter would be great addition to that pile. And Detroit would probably count as one of the three teams Suter might accept being traded to - as a Stars fan who wants to get rid of him I'm going to abuse and exhaust this possibility to its very end lol

That'll clear up around January-February time. Personally I think they've got a chance, I'd argue aside from ARI and DAL every team in Central is worse now than last year.

I doubt they are going to start the season with the assumption that they're selling later down the line, they want to upgrade from last year.

SEA acquiring Ullmark would only make sense if one of their 3 goalies would go other way.
Lindholm trade is somewhat interesting, but I'd wager CGY would prefer a return consisting more of futures than this.

As I said, Nill will get railed if Suter costs us another chance for the cup.
In other words, no.
I'm not that worried about making the playoffs even with Suter on the lineup. I just wish them to gradually give him less and less ice time.
They will say Suter will bring us more experience, but the sad thing is that majority of our D already have more games at the finals than he does. Last year was the first time for Suter to get past the second round during his 1400 game NHL career lmao.

Cap management
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>It's not relying on injuries. If they don't happen, then what's the problem? If they do, which they will, there isn't a problem either. That's what makes this all so funny to hear discussed. Your guys arguments are so empty. The Leafs can't run a 20 man roster because what happens when someone gets hurt? Well they call up an emergency injury replacement and spares if someone goes on LTIR.
"So you are relying on injuries? What if they don't come?"
Well that would be the luckiest team ever and once again, if they don't have any injuries at all, what's the problem with a 20 man roster?</div></div>
It's inconventional to say the least. No healthy scratches at all, risks of having to run undermanned roster is always present, no room at all to move players between NHL and AHL without taking waiver risk etc. It does help them that they have an AHL affiliate on very close proximity, so they can get emergency loans on short notice though - plenty of other teams do not have that privilege.
You can run a 20-man roster if necessary, but it's far from the best case scenario.
