DAL declines. Just pointless to waste high picks for assets of low need. Imo DAL is better off just staying as they are.

How Dallas esque to start the season with two games going to penalty shots.
At least the fans are getting bang for their buck.

Well Miller was the 7th D in the team already in the playoffs, he wasn't much of a difference maker.
They're putting more trust on Lundkvist this season, which I'm both happy, and concerned about.

Heiskanen Lundkvist

That's the big question isn't it?
Ideally I would've wanted Severson but he never reached the free agency. And after Nill decided to keep Suter around DAL couldn't afford to get a new guy.
Whoever is it, it won't happen until Suter is out, and he's untradeable. Maybe Nill finally decides to buy him out next offseason and DAL can get their guy via free agency - someone like Pesce might be available and he'd be an amazing fit to play with Miro imo.

I agree. Imo Girard is the wrong target for that however. Should be a puckmoving RHD that isn't a liability on his own end.

As much as I hate Suter, I hate the idea of losing Bourque and good picks over acquiring a relatively expensive player that is not even needed even more. Don't think COL is interested either.
NSH trade makes no sense from DAL perspective either.

Dallas season opener was truly a vintage Stars experience - taking a tight win after making the opposition goaltender look like a Vezina contender.

Rebuild due to boredom
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SlevinKalevra</b></div><div>Want it all you want but I think Nill made the right move waiting. He has to figure out how to upgrade the defense without giving away substantial assets and without hurting cap flexibility. We have an older core and a younger core and some nice prospects coming in. He has to balance all of that. We’ll see what happens. My ideal situation would be Harley pushing Suter to the third pair, a short term Hakanpaa upgrade, and a fourth line that can score (either with or without Faksa)</div></div>
I don't. He should've bought Suter out when he had the chance, and there's a risk it'll cost us a lot. Potentially a chance at the cup, if he gives us a similarly rotten performance he did against Vegas - I don't think I've ever seen one singular player do so many mistakes leading the opposition to score, and making Heiskanen look like he's average D at best...
There are/were tens of better options than Suter in the market, but he wouldn't budge. I can only hope he knows what he's doing...but I have my doubts.

Rebuild due to boredom
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy12Bob</b></div><div>You've just exposed your ignorance of what's going on in Detroit.
Detroit have the best prospect pipeline in the entire league on LD with Edvinsson, Johansson, Wallinder, and others but they are bereft of RD prospects that are close to being ready. That is the reason for Yzerman signing stopgap players that are RD (or capable of playing that position). We now have 7 competent NHL defenders that are signed to deals that fit very well with the expected timeframe in which our prospects are expected to mature.
Detroit is not going to trade away Määttä for a 38 year old player. Määttä will be needed the next couple of years as 3rd pair or 7th D depending how quickly Edvinsson and Johansson develop. Ghost will be traded at the deadline and one of those two will get the nod to replace him. On the right side we have Petry signed for two years and Holl for three, that is the time it will take for Sandin Pellikka, Tuomisto, and Gibson to develop into players that can replace them.
The Detroit defense is very well crafted considering what talent we have in our prospect pool and the time it will take for them to become ready to step up.</div></div>
Exposed my ignorance of Detroit's defense...sure man, whatever floats your boat.
It's a fairly accurate statement that DET has been adding meh D-man for a good while now, to the point they have to place a $3M dollar player as a healthy scratch, and have no room at all for any of the youths you mentioned unless injuries happen.
You're reading too much into this trade. It's a 7th D swap between Suter and Määttä, neither one is a lock to make to the lineup. DET gets a 2nd for taking in a worse player, although they'd play the same role. That trade wouldn't change anything for their core.

The center they should go for

Perhaps.
My suggestion would be pulling a 2015 again. One year retool to stockpile on things.
That core is not good enough and I think they know it too. I would take the pending UFAs they have and turn them into prospect/draft capital later down the line and hope they fall into the bottom-10 - that way they can keep their 2024 1st and get a good prospect.
After that, full send on the UFA market to bring in a proper 1C for 2024-25, whether it's Lindholm, Scheifele, Stamkos...there's plenty of better options in there than there is now, and now that their core is renewing anyway with Bergeron/Krejci retiring they got time to build again.
Selling DeBrusk, Ullmark, Grzelcyk for draft capital could end up being extremely valuable for them, as long as they don't f*ck up with the drafting again, similar to how they did in 2015.

If Boston really wanted him, I’m sure they would gladly overpay for Hayes to continue being good. If you were St.Louis, would you accept a 1st for Hayes?? Sure they need him but that’s a good offer. I don’t k wk just a thought</div></div>
Absolutely I would - what a great asset management would that be from STL GM, turning a 6th into a 1st.
Problem is though that BOS is not in position to move a first for a center like that, they already are missing their 2024 one after trading it for Bertuzzi, and the 2025 pick is also locked as conditional one on that trade. 2026 1st could be in play, but I'd be hesitant to move that quickly too, given Bruins prospect pool is pretty dreadful right now.
Bergeron and Krejci retiring drove them to a bit of a corner...

Who knows. The way DET has been acquiring meh D-men recently is just bonkers to me, Suter would be great addition to that pile. And Detroit would probably count as one of the three teams Suter might accept being traded to - as a Stars fan who wants to get rid of him I'm going to abuse and exhaust this possibility to its very end lol
