Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>I didn't say Marner was available. I'm just saying if there was any big ticket TOR player that CHI would be interested in, regardless of availability, I think Marner makes the most sense. I doubt CHI would have much interest in Nylander unless he is willing to take 4 years or less. But even then, it doesn't really make sense for CHI to do it unless they think they are going to be a serious playoff team in 24-25, which I highly doubt they have any intention of being. They certainly could attempt to, and probably be successful, but they would give up so much that it would conflict with their philosophy of building for "long term success".</div></div>
When the leafs drafted 34, they made the playoffs year one. I think the Hawks have a generational talent there and could surprise some people

I think any Nylander trade comes with the assumption he gets extended. Otherwise nobody would trade for him as a deadline rental.... unless the leafs absolutley have a disastrous year.

Yea I don't like it either... I have this sense that because of Nylander's demeanor around his contract (I think teams know he isn't emotional about it, and the market won't be as big as it should be), that Chicago has the space and the players to make the deal... I actually don't think they should trade Nylander... but some more sandpaper, and a young winger with cup pedigree plus a first isn't bad.
Toronto won't win the deal, unless they win a cup... player for player, you will lose the Nylander trade anywhere in the league bc you won't find 80 pts for 6.9M... I

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Erbas1915</b></div><div>That Flames trade is just nonsensical</div></div>
Maybe right now... I think Klingberg will have a solid year and return to a better version of himself upping his stock. I think the Flames could use a puck mover/QB and Tanev will not be resigning with the Flames, or at least I don't think they should re sign him... They have a lot of good rugged Dmen there, and they need some finesse.

Marner isn't available. And CHI is buying the opportunity to sell and exclusively negotiate with Willy... which I think they could do and get him his contract.

Is this fair
Toronto would be trading an 80 point player who is going to make 6.9M this year for nothing that is going to help them in the moment. Unless they were to flip those picks for a undercompensated high point producer... this does not make sense for TOR.
The argument to keep Nylander for the season is strong for me. And I've really pushed them to trade Nylander every year when he pulls up early on a hit it drives me nuts. But this year you are not going to get 40 goals and 80 pts back for 6.9M in any trade so it makes sense to play out the year and let him walk, or trade his rights for a pick at the end of the year.

Nylander trade isn't happening either. Leafs are competing for a Cup. Not making their team worse for the present.</div></div>
I don't think they should trade Willie... unless they were getting EK65... Sharks wouldnt eat all of it... just a small portion... I've read CHI is willing to eat some as part of a deal. That was the deal... EK to CHI, then to TOR... SJ retains 2M, CHI the rest... only way I trade Nylander is to make EK65 a reality... otherwise, im keeping him... AND you dont even need to trade Willy to make that happen... I'd trade Brodie and his $5M and try to make it work...

Changes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy12Bob</b></div><div>Detroit has no use for a 33 year old rental.
Our prospects on RD are at least two and probably three years away from making an impact in the NHL. That's why we have Holl for three years and Chiarot for three years.
Our prospects on LD are banging on the door to the NHL. That's why we have Ghost on an expiring deal so that he can be traded at the TDL.
Ghost was signed as an UFA, for the specific purpose to be a stop-gap until the TDL and then be dealt for a profit. Brodie is costing us, in this deal, more than we would get back at the TDL if we tried to trade him and we'd have nothig to replace him with if we did trade him.</div></div>
I was under the impression that the Chiarot deal is dead weight for Detroit. So the idea here was you get out from the Chiarot deal, Gain a solid Dman on an expiring deal that you could even resign for less on a decent deal considering he is from the area. The Leafs insulate Chiarot with a better, veteran high skilled group so that ALL he has to do is clear the front of the net and send it out of the zone up the glass. I think the Leafs would find value, and so could the Wings here

Would DET consider $1M of retention with this deal? That would make it less desperate I think... If Chiarot was surrounded with the talent of TOR, I think he would provide better D, and a simpler game... like he did in MTL/WPG

Agreed.... I would then deal either Klingberg depending on his season, and Lilegren for some toughness... Basically a Schenn type... but I wouldn't have paid him anywhere close to the deal he got. And that is totally feasible - teams are always looking for skilled D. Liljegren is actually sneaky with his physicality.
