Toronto Maple Leafs 2023 2024 Offseason Discussion - Draft Day And Free Agency
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFanForSomeReason</b></div><div>One year for Bertuzzi? I mean I'll take it for sure depending on the number, but I thought he wanted term, and based on the reported ask I would've been okay giving it to him.</div></div>
I am so stoked that it's only 1 year. Doesn't interfere with Matthews / Nylander extensions, avoids committing to a guy with some unfortunate injury history, and allows us to negotiate a contract with a higher cap ceiling. This is such a huge W it's not even funny
Assuming both Matthews and Nylander get ~2 mil raises, Brodie coming off of the books accommodates for that, effectively giving us at least an extra 1 mil to negotiate with Bertuzzi

TOR has lost 79 goals from the departing FA and by retaining Kampf and adding Reeves have put even more pressure on the core 4 to produce.
I refuse to believe John Klingberg at 4 mill would be anything better than this

I don't think it's impossible that CHI could be convinced to take him (no assets going back to TOR obviously) and then auction him off for some assets at the deadline in his contract year. The idea of having someone in the 1C role so Bedard isn't immediately stuck in that position is appealing.
In short, I don't hate this idea. Doubt it happens, but the fact that Tavares is owed a lot of cash / cap space for 2 years is hardly a problem for CHI.

Chicago would take any foolish trade that gives them Tavares. They just trade him to another team and get the real value.
Tavares only has 2 years on his contract and is still performing at a point a game. No reason to believe he will not maintain the for 2 more years.

Is everyone just going to ignore the fact Bertuzzi is 28 and has never played 82 games? He has a career high 62 points. He never made the playoffs in Detroit, not once. Boston had clinched before he got there and all he did was help them deliver one of the biggest choke jobs in NHL history. I find it humorous that Marner is looked upon as a playoff failure but has made the playoffs every year of his career and is almost a PPG with 14 points in 11 games. Bertuzzi is worth about 5*5, and there will be lots of regret there. 6 x 7 is just ridonkulous.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Trading Matthews signals rebuild. Unless u trade him and bring in someone better there is no going for it when hes gone. Its rebuild get rid of everyone. No ROR coming back, Nylander and Marner aint here anymore, blow it up and lets start fresh
U move Nylander or Marner it signals retool k this didnt work lets try this.
Personally this offseason presents something fascinating as Leafs got a lot of cap to work with. They can bring in 2 5mill forwards even with the big 4 signed.
U can explore trades but just imagine Toronto going out and bringing Bertuzzi and trading for Konecney, Labanc, or any other 5mill available forward and adding one or two of them to this team. Above I explored something and man u dont sacrifice much but Liligren. But at the same time u can also explore a Nylander or Marner</div></div>
I get what you’re saying but I’m not sure I necessarily agree. I think with the right moves you could retool with a Matthews trade but you do have a point. If you’re trading Matthews, might as well just go all in on the rebuild.

I dont really get that impression. Everyone here loves the Leafs, and as someone that has followed this team through some very dark days, it is infuriating to see such an amazing group of stars be wasted. We haven't had cup winning depth for ages, and if we blow it with a core as incredible as we have now, it will haunt us for ages. I hate that we can't get the most out of our roster. I want to see this team succeed more than many things, and this group obviously has it. We havent gotten the support or coaching we deserve. It is infuriating.

And what really sucks is we just wasted a generational talent. I’m feeling pretty low right now but the thought of Matthews signing an extension this summer feel nonexistent especially IF TOR gets swept and an organizational retool (should that happen).
I hated if they were playing since the TDL and that has stayed true throughout the playoffs.
What a fukcin waste

Sorry, so we are clear, I hate the idea of Simmonds coming into the lineup. He is coming in to do 1 thing, fight. That's it and will be a liability the rest of the way.
If anything I see Gus coming in for Knies (go 11/7) to mange Gio mins cause god help us if Keefe should sit him. And Holl will probably come in for Liljegren.

I also think you can now more confidently play Liljegren and maybe even Gus too if you're Keefe. As long as you keep them away from the Tkachuk-Bennett line they don't really have concerning snarl anywhere else in the lineup. Aside from Lomberg as well I guess. Makes us way more lethal on the transition game being able to more confidently deploy guys like that.
Also think we've got the edge in net, sammy's a doggggg</div></div>
They just took out BOS and are playing with house money. Let’s call a spade a spade here, TOR could barely handle a Dcore of Bogosian, Raddysh, Perbix, and Cole.
Agree to disagree all good. But I’m not taking FLA lightly

If this is truly the end for Bergeron, I am genuinely kind of sad for him and only him. The guy is world class leader, player, and role model. The league will not be the same without him.
