what are your Canadian division power rankings
1. Toronto - solid overall, no big changes, tend to start decent, some grit/leadership brought in.
2. Edmonton - no changes to top2 string, good special teams, 56 games short enough for Mcdavid/Draisaitl to not run out of gas
3. Calgary - Finally have an decent goalie in Markström, forwards due a bounceback
4. Winnipeg - Have now 2nd line center, best goalia (if not big dip in production coming), defense (althought dodgy) have now 1 year behind them playing together. If top6 get it going, hard to play against.
5. Vancouver - weaker goaltending (Demko needs to step up in my opinion), lost Toffoli, Miller would need to repeat best season of his career.
6. Monreal - defense even slower with Edmundsson (will struggle against fast teams, not sure if Kotkaniemi ready for much bigger role ( looked mediocre playing in Finnish Liiga), Anderson has to find his form quick to make up for the contract they somehow gave him
7. Ottawa - improved quite some, but basically rebuilding, check again in 2-3 years. Might be quite different then
And of course all these change if some goalie gets on fire (Price for example)

Who would you rather have?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EsoYeezus69</b></div><div>Alright, in my opinion I ranked them as a tie, I need some input on this.
Scenario: The two players are dman of the same size, Option 2 is a offensive dman who likes to score and rushes the play with his size and skating abilities, and is 2x better than the other one in the offensive zone, Option 1 is more of a complete dman who likes to also rushes the puck but has more of the intent of making a play than to try to score like Option 2, he's a top unit PK and PP, which both of them are league leading because of him and his defensive play is 2x better than Option 2.
Option 1 has a better Slap shot, Wrist shot but Option 2 has better accuracy and a better quick release.
They both use checking to the MAX and they play on the same line.
BTW not in the NHL, in another league.
If you have any questions ask me.</div></div>
I found this hard to read. To get this straight in my head:
Option 1: 2-way d-man, playmaker, 2x better in the d-zone
Option 2: offensive d-man, shooter, better skating, 2x better in the o-zone.
Both: same size, checking, rush the puck, top PP/PK units.

To add to this, they already knew about his history of beefing with his teams over salary. They shouldn't have been surprised that he asked for more than they were willing to pay. And at least if they qualify him, they have the cap space to afford it and can flip him later on.

what are your Canadian division power rankings
1. Toronto
This is pretty clear-cut. They have the best team on paper and have at least addressed some of their defensive woes. High-flying offense and pretty good goaltending make them an obvious pick for top in the division.
2. Edmonton
Toronto-west. The blueline takes a hit for sure with the loss of Klefbom, but Koskinen has shown to be steady and the Oilers went and added a third scoring line. It'll be firewagon hockey, but keeping pace with the Oilers is going to be difficult at best. We're also not considering that McDavid is going to be healthy this season, he hasn't had to rehabilitate his knee and has actually gotten in training time. He alone makes the Oilers scary. Goaltending could absolutely sink them, but find me a team that is immune to that.
3. Montreal
If Suzuki and Kotkaniemi maintain form from the playoffs and Price is steady, the Canadiens are going to challenge for the #2 spot. Very deep team with a quality blueline. If the two young pivots falter, I think they might slide to 4th, <em>maybe</em> 5th if the depth and goaltending can't hold. I like what they did in the offseason, and it's really hard to bet against the guy who's defined the idea of successful goaltending for so long. Very well-balanced team, I just can't fully get behind the hype given the uncertainty of their two young centers.
4. Calgary
As a team, they remained pretty even: Markstrom is a positive add but I think Giordano and Tanev are going to prove to be detrimental to this team. Toronto, Edmonton, and Winnipeg all especially rely on speed and offense and I think their aging defencemen are going to lose the ability to keep up. Not a fan of Backlund as a #2C, and running Lindholm as a pivot dilutes their offense. Their depth is bad, with their third and fourth lines not looking to be super productive. I really want to see Valimaki succeed.
5. Winnipeg
Electric offense and a goaltender that demonstrated mastery the year before is going to make the Jets a pain in the ass to contend with. Hellebyuck is rested too, I don't expect last year's load to influence how he plays this season. I cannot get behind that blueline though. It's ugly, and I genuinely think it'll be Winnipeg's Achilles this season. Their only hope to vault up the rankings is for Hellebyuck to channel Hasek again and for their top-six to outscore their woes. If they add a quality rearguard at the deadline, they could squeak in.
6. Vancouver
The only team in the new Canadian division that got genuinely worse. The loss of Markstrom and Toffoli to the division really hurts this team. I'm not a believer in Holtby and firmly believe that Demko is going to have to put this team on his back in order for success to make it to the West Coast. Hughes and Pettersson will be fun to watch, but the bottom-six and rest of the blueline leaves a lot to be desired.
7. Ottawa
I have them last in the division but finishing in the range of picking 8th-10th overall. This is not the worst team in the league and I believe most of their adds to be positive. The issue here is inexperience and uncertainty. Probably the last year of the "official" rebuild, the Sens will look to add another dynamic youngster at the draft, but I don't see them actively selling pieces this year. Upward and onward!

I’m not saying the leafs’ are screwed come playoff time, but if you don’t have depth m, your not making it past the first round. All I said in my original comment was I’m not sure if Thornton and Simmonds are the answer for the bottom 6.</div></div>
Top-6 totally matters at playoff time. Palat and Wilson were on the top line, Sundqvist was on the second line. Bottom 6s have holes in them. The Leafs' bottom 6 is not perfect, but still completely fine. The Leafs' will go as far as their top players take them, which based on past experience is not far.

then you say it's timothy liljegren and the hype deflates and he's a bust because he wasn't erik karlsson from age 18
people forget that muzzin, brodie, and dermott all didn't make their NHL debut until age 21-22. Liljegren made his at 20 and might crack the roster at age 21, or at the very worst age 22. he still has a pathway to being a viable top 4 guy - definitely not a superstar, but he will be in the leafs top 4 one day imo</div></div>
He's somehow become the throw in guy for 50% of Leafs ACGMs and often in the same damn ACGM they're bringing an older RHD with less pedigree and NHL experience. It's something I'll never understand

One hot take per team in the northeastern division
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>Its a mix of both - the only contracts I thought made no sense were komarovs and hickey, but Trotz has more say on signings/trades than people think. I know in Nashville poille used to sign grinders and draft certain types of players that trotz wanted. He's the reason why the islanders traded toews instead of leddy (who is a terrible fit on the isles). According to the isles writer for the athletic, trotz didn't want leddy traded because he sees him as more reliable because he's further along in his career...
The problem with trotz is he refuses to improve the team with better (and younger) internal options. The double standard he has between veteran grinders and young players is insane. Tom kuhnhackl was on for 4 goals against (in 10 min ice time) one game and he was in the lineup the next game. Bellows/wahlstrom turn the puck over one time and theyre demoted to the 4th line and back to the AHL a few days later. Boychuk had one of the worst defensive impacts in the league and Dobson was one of our better defenseman. He still elected to short shift or scratch dobson because trotz motto is vets>young players.</div></div>
most coaches motto's trust me though i feel your resentment. I was very anti-claude as a bruins fan. for the exact same reason. chris kelly had more value to him than tyler seguin.

One hot take per team in the central eastern division
<strong>RESPONSES TO YOUR PREDICTIONS:</strong>
Wings: Maybe. The forwards have potential but the defense is a black hole. Hronek is the only solid D-man currently and Seider will not be enough to move the needle.
CBJ: They need a goal-scorer. Hoffman is a better target.
CHI: we don't talk about him
STL: Maybe. But there are other issues with this team. STL fans have been very quick to blame goalies over the last few years, and I can't blame them.
NSH: They only got that close because they had Subban.
CAR: Eh.
TBL: In the playoffs? Yes. But - as a Lightning fan - people are overrating him because of the 2020 playoffs. He needs to produce a bit more in the regular season before we put him in that category. But he's got the potential.
FLA: I still have no idea why they traded Trocheck.
<strong>MY HOT TAKES</strong>
Wings: Fabbri will continue to shock people
CBJ: They will be a contender if they get Hoffman
CHI: DeBrincat will have a bounce-back year
STL: Would not be surprised if they go after Palat or Killorn
NSH: Get rid of Johansen and Duchene, then go after Cirelli
CAR: Fleury?
TBL: If Foote doesn't make the team out of camp, he needs to be traded
FLA: Barkov was so underrated that now he's overrated
