<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LIRIK</b></div><div>I'd rather have Barrie than Hoffman. Both are on the same contract. Trading Edmundson clears a spot on LD for Harris or Xhekaj. I don't care about Barrie bumping Wideman.
MTL is gonna use those 3 retaining slots this year. MTL is okay even if they only have 2 next year. They won't have many players to trade next year who need salary retention.</div></div>
I think they want to have a spot on the right next year for Barron or Mailloux (hopefully spelt right and I know he is more complicated). I would be surprised if they considered Hoffmans roster spot a greater barrier to development than Barrie would be.

I don't get why these trades are coming up over and over again. I cannot imagine mtl retaining salary on anyone for more than the end of this season unless the other party is really dishing out value in exchange. They can only have 3 retained salaries on the books at any time and having the ability to trade expiring contracts at the deadline with money retained is too valuable in acquiring futures to give away an opportunity in a future year without real compensation. I also cannot see mtl wanting the trade for Barrie, he would be an upgrade but they are not as concerned about winning as who they are winning with and Barrie would be a huge change in direction from management. He does not in anyway fit what their winning window will be and they have cheeper more defensively responsible D to play with the youth.

Carolina Hurricanes signed Jesperi Kotkaniemi (8 Years / $4,820,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>M_Swann</b></div><div>This contract is gonna be a steal pretty soon. Habs fans laughing at paying a 4th liner over 4 mil, but its not any better to pay close to 7 mil for Byron and Armia. At least Kotkaniemi still has potential to grow into this deal.</div></div>
Closer to 5 mill than four. He may play 2nd line next year but that does not mean he will be good at it. He has gotten back to his rookie year form this year but that is hardly an improvement overall. He has put up those numbers at 4th line minutes. Every time he has been given harder match ups his production has plummeted. I hope it works out for the Canes but I would guess they feel ok about it at best when the contract is done.

Well then
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeterChiarelli</b></div><div>I put a lot of faith in analytics and the math suggests strongly against that opinion. Chiarot last year was like an average top-4 option and this year he's hardly above replacement level. De Haan's numbers are exceptional and have been for a while. Diverting to more of a traditional eye test, De Haan simply looks better this year. He may not be playing 24 minutes a night but he's maintained a very steady track record at around the 19 minute mark his entire career.
If he's cheaper, has much stronger underlying numbers, and appears to be *at worst* interchangeable with Chiarot, why pay the premium?
Regardless, six years of +20min per night holds a lot more intrinsic value than Chiarot being at that same level for two years.
He's got a 15% WAR: either that entire team is hot garbage, overachieved last year, or both. No matter how you slice it, his poor metrics this year and the team struggling as a whole further underscores why you should acquire last year's Habs with a grain of salt and maybe not pay a fortune for anything they're offering.</div></div>
To be accurate of the six years you reference he was only above 20 min average three times and he was playing on a team that played some of the best team D in the league. I am not saying Chiarot is better than Savard but they are about as closely comparable as you get. For the services of Chiarot a contender will pay close or similar to the 1st and 3rd Savard got last year. I do think he would be a big upgrade from Keith on the oilers second pair.
Also, The losses of Danault, Price, Weber and Edmundson plus the injuries are being felt this year. Half the team belong in the AHL not a surprise how the season is going.

Well then
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeterChiarelli</b></div><div>Savard had a really, really good track record leading up to that season however and had six years of top-pair workloads. Chiarot's only ever been top-four good with the Habs. I'm not convinced with his track record and ultimately what would convince me is if he went and rebounded elsewhere such that Edmonton doesn't assume that risk.</div></div>
Savard played top four not first pair, Seth Jones was acquired because he didn't hack it on the top pairing the year and a half they tried. His average time on ice hovered just around 20 mins since, fairly normal second pair minutes. Also, Chiarot is the only D man playing half decent in on the Habs this year. Terrible year for the team but Chiarot is not the problem on their back end.

In response to Radu47. I know that is the case but I am sure someone will pay it considering his playoff performances the last two post seasons. I mean Savard got a First and a Third and Chiarot has played better than him for the last few years.

I agree completely, and Montreal likely be able to sign KK for for 3 next summer when he is a UFA... ;)

Whom ever gets to keep KK is basically agreeing to 24.4 mil over four years and then loose him to free agency, one year and loose him to free agency or anything in between. There is no incentive for KK to sign anything less. Anything longer will take that into account. If his team does not want to pay he will go to free agency and see what the highest bidder pays for the young guy. KK is not going to take less anywhere but the open market.

absolutely, It only Removes the cap hit of the player it does not give extra dollars above that.

Also, that is not how LTIR works, CapFriendly already calculates the benefit when you put the player on LTIR. That means you are too far over the cap on this one by $5444227.

Drouin and Dvorak had almost identical points per game last season and Drouin has out paced him every other year they were both in the league that is a significant over pay.

Habs now that Paquette and Wideman are comimg
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wqrrior</b></div><div>This is what happens when you play in Arizona. You don't get the credit you deserve as a player. The guy is extremely underrated and is more than competent offensively and brings very strong defense. Pretty much another Eriksson Ek.
He's a 2nd line center (or can be on the wing on some teams) on most every team. I'd have him above KK on MTL as he directly replaces Danault.
All in all, a very valuable center on a really good contract who should see fantastic numbers on a team that gives him a shot.</div></div>
He scored 31 points with over 18 minutes of ice time a game. Did so playing with skilled guys like Kessel and/or Keller mostly. Yes Arizona sucked. That is because they had players playing more ice time than their skills warranted. Dvorak was one of those guys.

Wouldn't they do better to use him for the next four years instead of having to replace him for that period AND wait for the picks to mature into real players? Would trading Jeff Petry for three similar futures make sense?</div></div>
Dvorak is not a top six C on a contender. He is a great 3rd liner though.

Realistic D Help
I think you undervalue how much MTL thinks Chariot means to their success. Fair or not this trade would not get him. Also, after Vegas expansion Bergevin said there was no winning trading to influence expansion picks. Best thing is just protect who you can and let the chips fall as they will. I think he is banking on Allen being taken.

Alzner is a 4.625 mil cap hit but only 3 and 3.5 in actual pay respectfully. I think this is exactly what Eugene is looking for.

Juulsen is in the Hall trade. Poehling and Kulak I don't think would be as valued by other teams as Habs fans think. Hopefully the 2 is a late round pick with these additions.

I figured it would be somewhere Petry would go, I am not committed to the return necessarily. Although Petry's contract may be too long for a fill in for De Haan.
