Yeah they’re dumping salary but if you were paying attention to that situation you’d know Quenneville specifically is trying to develop strong relationships with Barkov+Ekblad, as they are the long-term leaders of the team and quite frankly the only untouchables, for good reason. And I’d like to reiterate—a 3rd liner doesn’t get you a #1 RHD in any universe, even if they were selling Ekblad (which they are not) they could get more value than that from any other team, and that as an initial offer means they probably don’t even bother negotiating with you because it’s a super low-ball and you’re never gonna reach an acceptable level of value if you actually believe that ever had a chance of being considered.
I understand the point of the Ottawa trade and the NJD trade. The young teams don’t like losing that asset (#33 and Foote respectively) but you’re super overpaying to the point where they can easily get more value by trading on the pieces they acquire so both teams would probably accept.
See above comment on what happens when you trade a star for “cap space”</div></div>
Can't say I've been paying attention to FLA beyond the owner wanting to save money - so if that's the case where those are the centre pieces of the team going fwd then yes I've low balled the offer. In which case I wouldn't do the deal and thus the ANA/Nylander deal doesn't happen subsequently making this ACGM needing a revisit.

The NJD trade might be a slight overpay by Toronto but Foote is very much the kind of player Toronto should be looking to find. He's the perfect spice to add to a Tavares-Marner or Matthews-Nylander line.</div></div>
Isn't it worse for CBJ to have an asset sit on the sidelines and receive nothing for him. If a team were to offer sheet him, it would be a 2nd round pick, this deal gives a 2nd plus a potential player.

Matthews or Marner are going the other way or there isn't a discussion. Your 4th best forward isn't good enough to land a #1 RHD, and your what, 8th best forward? Definitely isn't
Ottawa doesn't like giving up #33 but the value there is unreal so they take it and run.
NJD is fleecing Toronto there lol
CBJ trade is fine, Anaheim trade doesn't make much sense for the Leafs at all, like I don't know what the motivation is for this deal other than not liking Nylander for some reason??</div></div>
Owner in FLA wants to dump salary so it makes no sense to send back Matthews/Marner. This isn't a hockey trade it's a financially driven trade for FLA.
OTT trade is they get playable contracts rather than dead salary, with Gaborik, that Leafs use to get cap compliant via LTIR.
NJ deal to free up cap and hope Foote can develop into a player in a couple of years (ie Kessel for Kapanen).
ANA trade had to happen after Ekblad trade, not wanting to trade Nylander but had to with a flat cap.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>justaBoss</b></div><div>CBJ trade is fine imo
FLA trade needs work. FLA looks to strengthen their defense, not weaken it.
ANA trade is pretty bad for the Leafs imo. Rakell's a step down from Nylander, Larsson would have hard time fitting your lineup as it is and Kesler's just dead money by this point. TOR as a "contender" don't really benefit from acquiring picks.
Same goes for OTT and NJ trades. I think you could garner more value by trading Kappy, Dermott, Mikheyev and Kerfoot seperately.</div></div>
FLA, is also looking to free up about $10m in payroll per their owner apparently. Getting Sandin, with a promising future, on an entry level deal plus cheaper help on the wing if/when Hoffman walks.
ANA deal, didn't want to move Nylander but had to after the FLA deal. Rakell is a cheaper Top 6 fwd to fill in the space left by Nylander. Larsson fills the void left by Sandin as a young upcoming LD and is on a cost effective deal. Kesler is simply a LTIR play, to allow Leafs to go over cap and bury the contract since they can afford it. I disagree, contenders do benefit from picks as it's currency for other deals or helps stock the cupboards.
OTT and NJ trades, Gaborik is another LTIR play and picks/prospects are future currency and/or development, see above, while freeing up current cap space.

Nice, but moving Nylander is contingent on getting the FLA trade done and Kesler is required as an LTIR play.

The deal is really Barbashev and a 3rd for Johnsson; only included Allen (+ retained dollars) and Hutchinson in the deal to keep the total salary impact close to flat as both StL and Tor are up against the cap - otherwise StL can keep their $4m backup.

By that time, there will be more solid playoff picture and teams will trade 1st + prospect for him.</div></div>
I don't think he (Ferland) fetches a 1st and a prospect regardless of when he's moved though, sorry. Brown may not be as good a player but he comes with 1 more season on a good contract.

Trades for a playoff run CAR LA STL
<a href="/users/Caniac555" target="_blank">@Caniac555</a> & <a href="/users/Jamiepo" target="_blank">@Jamiepo</a> unless the Canes receive a better offer, seems pointless to lose Ferland for nothing. Can add a conditional pick if Ferland is resigned by the Leafs.
<a href="/users/LeafsFan123" target="_blank">@LeafsFan123</a> Ferland is a rental and can help on the left side (I'm not against trying to resign him in the offseason depending on how he gels with the team and if the money works - $2m for Brown on the 4th line - he's not passing Marner/Nylander/Kap on the depth chart - doesn't help the Leafs cap going forward). LA is looking for a prospect and a 1st for Muzzin - Bracco fulfills the prospect and instead of the 1st they get a 3rd and Gardiner who they reflip elsewhere before the deadline to get additional picks/prospects. For the Leafs - Muzzin is slightly cheaper than Gardiner, signed for 1 more season, and has cup experience. For the STL deal, Parayko is only in his 4th season so he's far from a seasoned vet which is why moving Liljegren is fine, he's also on a cap friendly deal for 3 more years as opposed to Zaitsev who's not as good and on a longer deal.

Today on a 1 for 1 maybe but the deals are all a domino effect so you have to ask is:
Subban + Fiala + Turris + Bonino > Draisital + Faulk + Pacioretty ?
I don't think so personally.
Also are you prepared to pay Josi, who is the best D man on NSH, and the Captain more than PK's $9 AAV in 2 yrs? Makes sense to get value from him now when you can cause all the replacement pieces are available today in a RHD top 4 guy and a 30 goal LW.

I agree a defensive minded D would be better but easier said than found.
Not worried about the cap cause JVR and Komarov will be off the books this year. Letang is $3m above Gardiner for this year and next, and then for the final 3 years of Letang's deal Hainsey comes off in that first year and Marleau the following. I also don't believe Gardiner will resign following his current deal.

From the Ducks perspective, doubtful we'll be able to resign JVR so why trade trade unless an equally talented cheap young forward is coming back.
Suggestion ... Montour for Kapanen, Carrick and a 2nd

JVR for Demers (Year 2) ... Can Tavares work?
Realistically Tavares is in the $8-10m per year range, but why not overpay him for 1 year while we can afford it with Matthews & Marner on their entry level deals. The extra money offsets the extra term/security Tavares would get elsewhere and gives him (and the Leafs) a legit shot at the cup.
You can't compare Tavares playing with Okposo/Ladd vs what he'd be like playing with Marner/Nylander. And a center group of Matthews/Tavares/Kadri easily becomes one of if not the best in the league.

JVR for Demers (Year 1)
Yes, JVR is a better player than Demers but ... Florida wants to get rid of his contract (he already nixed a deal to Vancouver) and could use some offense with the loss of Marchessault, the cost of getting rid of his contract is 1 yr of JVR with no guarantee JVR re-signs with them.

Bored (See post below) Year 2
After some more thought ...
I like the acquisition of Schmidt because he fills the top 4 LHD gap between when that batch of kids is ready for top 4 minutes and when Gardiner moves on after his current contract.
Worth the risk on Myers ... JVR could walk for nothing at the end of the year and we have better depth on the wings than RHD. Average over his career is 55 GP/season, excluding the lockout shortened season, but I'd take a chance on that 55 GP because we'd still have Rielly, Gardiner, Zaitsev, Schmidt even if/when he is out of action. Keep in mind, that JVR straight up for Hamonic was rejected and the Hall/Larsson deal last year so we can't overvalue JVR.

I don't see anyone on the Habs NHL roster (that they would want to trade) that would make the Leafs better opening night. If the Leafs are out of the playoff picture closer to the trade deadline then some of the trades discussed would make more sense but not now.

I agree Marchenko isn't someone that can be relied on (I traded him for a 4th rounder to Dallas in my scenario). And you are correct about Valiev being a LD, I thought I saw right shot somewhere but I was wrong. That changes how I feel about your trade and moving on from Carrick. It's a fair deal but I'm not sure how much sense it makes for our long term. If you bring in Tanev and deal one of Nielsen/Dermott along with Kappy. You get three more years of Tanev while Carrick can be allowed to grow slowly on the third pair and hopefully he's ready for big minutes once Tanev's current deal is over, who you then move on from. On the left side the future sets up for Reilly Gardiner and one of Nielsen/Dermott.
I think bringing back Polak would be a better option than Franson.
I'm not calling Nylander a complement guy, I said I remember Babcock saying something like that.

hmmmm .... I was looking at Tanev ( <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/313682">https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/313682</a> ) but your Hamonic deal makes sense as well.
No need to move Bozak yet, I'd re-sign Boyle for 2 yrs then next year depending on where the Leafs sit at the trade deadline you either keep both for another playoff run or deal one of them and have Gauthier come up for the remainder of the season.
I don't agree with the UFA signings of Franson and Winnik. Winnik for the reason above and Franson as I'd rather have a younger D-man (Marchenko, Valiev) compete for the 3rd RD spot.
With the lines, I don't disagree fully, but I don't think it works with Babcocks style ... I remember Babcock saying at some point this year he prefers Matthews and Marner on separate lines as each of them can "drive" their own line whereas Nylander is more of a complement guy, or something to that extent. As well he (Babcock) like a "grinder" with his skill going back to Abdelkader with Datsyuk/Zetterberg, so I see him keeping Hyman with Matthews and Komarov with Kadri. Personally, if Brown or Kapanen can play the off wing (or Babcock gives Leivo a chance) I'd like to test one of them on the top line in place of Hyman and you let Hyman centre the 4th line between Martin and Shosh (in which case I wouldn't bring back Boyle).

I agree with the depth issue on LW, and I like JVR, but watching the Leafs through the first few games offence isn't an issue D is. This gives them a chance to get a proven top 4 right hand shot D, on a good contract, and see what they have in Leivo/Leipsic/Rychel this season while they're not a competing team.

They could wait but teams will play hardball with them knowing their desperation to move someone or lose them for nothing in the draft whereas now they get back a top 6 fwd. Also JVR isn't part of the rebuild, he'll be close to 30 when his current deal expires in 2 years and looking for a payday. He's not going to get they payday from the leafs as the kids will be looking for money as well a couple season(s) later. So move him now and maximize the asset.

Current Lineup
This is probably one of the best explanations and possible lineups I've seen.
A few things I could see happening differently though:
- 1st line concept is dead on but move Komarov over to the left side and slot Michalek on the right side. I think they'll use Michalek with Kadri to showcase him for a trade later in the year, much like they used Parenteau last year (minus the trade)
- Shosh doesn't make the leafs out of camp but will be first in line for call-ups as injuries/trades occur. He get's the 3rd RW spot if Marner only plays the 9 games before being sent to WJ, which I think has a good chance.
- 4th line, I agree with you about Leivo getting a legit shot but I see it coming down to Leivo, Hyman, Laich, Holland, and Greening battling for those 3 spots. I'm leaning towards Leivo/Laich/Greening with Holland being your extra fwd, drawing in/out of your lineup with Laich, and Hyman gets sent back to AHL
I think you've got the 2nd and 3rd lines and D pairings dead on.
