Picks the Caps have traded away
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>qc14</b></div><div>Some of my biggest changes:
Cowan was WIDELY seen as a huge reach at the time, literally no one predicted the breakout he has had this year, knocking that deal up a bit in my eyes (even if Sandin hasn't been quite as good as expected as well)
Shattenkirk was the right move to make at the time and was the best Caps D that playoff run. Would also add that Copley and Sanford were considered pretty good pieces at the time and while both have had solid NHL careers, they never really panned out.
The Winnik move wasn't really for Winnik but more to get off of Laich's deal and Carrick, not the 2nd, was a bigger piece at the time -- they made the right call on that one
Your Glencross analysis is spot on though. On the Mount Rushmore of my all time least favorite Caps right next to Tim Gleason, Dustin Penner, and TFB</div></div>
haha you can throw Jeff Schultz and Mike Weber on that list for me as well

To be fair tho, Alexyev has looked really good the past 2 weeks or so. Which is surprising given I thought he had already hit his ceiling more or less
Bear I will give the benefit of the doubt to until he gets a full offseason with the club (but yea haven't liked his play here)

Norris is an interesting player but the cap hit is way too high for too long, especially when Lapierre, Leonard, Miro, and Cristall will likely need to get paid within the next 4 seasons.</div></div>
Counterpoint: the cap is going up and with backstrom, Oshie, and Carlson coming off the books, you can afford to make a big move. I think Hanifin and Norris together are far too much money wise, but Norris alone would be a perfect fit.

I don’t think $2.5M is a bad number for Wood. On pace for 12 goals & 30 points and plays with physicality. It’s the term that’s scary.
The eventual Mittelstadt extension changes their cap situation since they signed Wood’s contract. Wood has been fine for them, but they could look to save on the margins, especially if Kovalenko or Trenin could fill that role at a smaller number.

3 way stl and wash
First off, OSH will retire as a Washington Capital.
Second, fans would burn down MSG if Rangers brass paid a first and 3 healthier bodies for what is left in the Oshie tank (for a Cup run this year only) as he is most likely and LTIRetirment candidate next year if his on/off injury woes do not alleviate. Oshie has even pondered shutting it down very long term and while he's the best bench/locker room and on-ice guy any team could want...his health and production have been steep drops...
Still Oshie is LOVED in DC....and while this ROI is high. It is not a likely trade for STL either.

McM next ...</div></div>
I am very curious to see what McM comes in at...
I am kinda with you - I thought Protas would get a bride (and honestly I thought he would get around 2m). Unlike some other Caps fans, I thought Protas was give slightly too much.
Sandin extension was spot on imo. Start of the season, I had Sandin 5x5m. With the amount he played this year, I would find it hard to imagine he would take anything less than 4.6m.
It does beg the question now...are we comfortable with Fehevary and Sandin as 1 and 2 LHD...? If the Caps want to be a contending team, I don't know...

Especially with both extra cap space AND 12 picks in the first 3 rounds over the next 3 years. Lot to work with
But 1000% agree with you - if all the Caps get are 1-2 late seconds, that won't help the team rebuild/retool. Bmac really has to flip those picks for actually players who are either NHL ready now or will be next season (or a top 6 forward but I have a feeling that won't happen until the offseason)

Ohh I 100% get it from the Caps end too, I'd likely do the same thing, minors until the off season and buy him out, but you never know with GMBM maybe he's down to take a chance on Campbell with Lindgren gone after this year to back up Darcy- again just a spitballing an idea to save them $4.1m(Dowd's hit to0) next season to add to Backy's LTIR savings- could give the Caps alot of wiggle room to go big game hunting in the offseason for a top line C-but doubting Kuzy or Campbell get traded and both bought out in the off season..

don't think there's anything that would convince them to retain for that long that wouldn't be immediately a no-go for TOR. Would probably have to be the level of the 24 1st. Not saying it's objectively what a 1.5m TVR is "worth" but Caps have been very hesitant to have dead money across multiple years through either retention or buyouts - don't think that feeling from ownership/management is going to change.</div></div>
What if it was minor like barely 750k
I was thinking a TVR 25% retained & Mantha 50% for Robertson,Timmins & the 2024 1st with like a 4th coming back to Toronto

Fair enough. I felt that if Washington had a late 2nd this year then maybe the Leafs could add value by moving the first but still having a 2nd. I also considered upgrading the 25' 5th to even as high as a 3rd but I doubt it moves the needle much. In an ideal world, the leafs would just live with no retention on Jensen - could be done if Kovacevic isnt added but Timmins is still moved.

My understanding of the Capitals situation
Caps have to let Mantha go imo. I've defended the guy for a year and a half and he's a great player but his value likely won't be higher and if the Caps intend on giving a roster chance to Miro, Leonard, Sutter, Frank, Limoges, or Dube, then Mantha is likely the one out. I don't think they'll be willing to justify scratching Oshie which only really leaves Mantha's spot up for grabs, whether it's filled through a young guy or a free agent signing.
Also, small point on the last bit, while it'll be fun to watch in preseason, I expect Chesley, Iorio, and definitely Persson and Gibson are still at least another year away from making the team. To me, Leonard and Miro are the only two guys mentioned with a chance to steal a spot, since the Caps decided to forego Haman-Aktell's good camp for a mediocre one from Johansen, I expect the rest don't truly have much chance to make the roster out of camp.

This is a ton for Pettersson. Young pieces, current pieces, future pieces. Canucks fans who are saying this isn’t enough don’t understand what’s coming back. This is more than I’d want to give up.
At the end of the day though, Pettersson isn’t going anywhere. He’s gonna end up signing in Vancouver and spending most or all of his career there.

Ethan Bear is not good
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>qc14</b></div><div>Bear has been a massive disappointment to me this year -- not that he is what will make or break the season, but that's the type of deal that GMBM usually finds some nice wins on and he's been borderline unplayable.
I would love Middlestadt and I think he would be my #1 target. I don't see us having the type of assets Buffalo is rumored to want to make the deal work unless you include Fehervary or just go crazy with the futures (in this deal, I think you would have to have the 24 1st).
Everything else is around what I expect if they sell.</div></div>
I agree on Mittelstadt, thought maybe Jensen would be enticing. I was so pumped for Bear to get a shot here, I didn't think he would be a game-breaker or anything, but holy hell he gets exposed out there. He looked like vintage Jeff Schultz on that Nick Paul goal the other night, it was b r u t a l. He's got time to turn it around, and maybe I had too high expectations, but man, I was hoping for a lot more.

A second and a third for Mantha with retention should be plenty, but if there's a bidding war he may end up costing a first. Regardless this would be the max he would realistically go for and I don't think it would actually get to be this much.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>qc14</b></div><div>- I think Lappierre remains in the org. Not enough depth at forward to necessitate a move and he doesn't have a high enough pedigree/strong enough results to be worth a lot on the open market anyways.
- The forward version of Sandin (in terms of the bet, hopefully not in terms of results so far!) is exactly what I think GMBM wanjts to do. Would love Frost but I think most of the issues between him and Philly have been cleared up and I don't think he'll be available. MIddlestadt I don't know if the caps have what it takes to make a move for. Not sure what other options are out there
- Leonard I think we really have to wait to see how he looks without Perrault/Smith. Not saying he's being carried by them as almost all prospect guy says that he drives a lot of that line, just that the chemistry between them is so good it's tough to know what other situations look like. By second line winger I think more they mean that he's not going to be the best winger on a cup contender -- more of a brady Tkachuk than a Matthew
- Lindholm
- I think changing the scheme hasn't been as important as not having Kuzy ... obviously no one would ever admit that</div></div>
Should clarify on my first point, I don’t mean out of the org, just not being called up this year so they can see others. Think he’s a top candidate for 3C next season.
Regarding Lindholm, I feel they’ll likely balk at his asking price. Not sure they’re comfortable devoting 9 out of a free 12 mil to him.
I like Mittelstadt as a youth option also.

- Keep an eye on Clay Stevenson to move up his eta, especially if there are subtractions at the deadline.
- Caps will likely use their 1st on a center or a RHD. Looking for the next Backstrom or Carlson.
- McMichael is now viewed by the organization as a "graduated" prospect. So, no more trips to Hershey for him, even (potentially) for the AHL playoffs.
- Teams aren't allowed to share almost anything about players in the assistance program, and may not even know all the details regarding circumstances themselves. So, in the dark on Kuznetsov.
- TEB's rankings for players who could get traded at the deadline (from highest to lowest): Dowd, Edmundson, Mantha, Jensen, TvR, Pacioretty, Lindgren, Kuemper. Caps aren't looking to trade players for low round picks, looking still to retool and feel the depth of the draft is weak. Says Dowd has been on team's radars for a while and would also add NAK into trade talks.
- Expects Dowd, Mantha, and Edmundson to generate most interest at the deadline (as said above) and that Dowd will provide the biggest return.
- On the top of Leonard's ceiling, has heard 2nd line winger deployed in all situations.
- Also on Leonard, says gut feeling is that he will return to BC next year. Could change if they win it all and Smith+Perreault move on, as well as assurances that a top 9 spot will not be a crowded competition. Leonard is "hyper-aware of the fine line" between making a jump early vs arriving at the right time.
- Deadline will likely be similar to last year if they sell. Trading UFAs and looking for youth/prospects to expedite the rebuild. Also says Caps would like to make another Sandin style move.
- Thinks Frank, Stevenson, Limoges, and maybe Sutter to get chances in the NHL if the situation arises, along with Dube who just got called up.
- Deadline will shed more light on the Caps plan for TvR, Jensen, and Bear. Carlson isn't going anywhere, and the signing of Bear likely means they think Iorio is still a decent ways away.
- Expects Trineyev and Stevenson to be the "surprise" prospects to make the team over the next 2-3 years.
- Caps still view Lapierre as a middle 6 center, no change on their view of him.
- Says he would be very surprised if the Caps don't find a way to add a pass first, veteran top 6 center.
- Zegras obviously fits the bill on the type of player the Caps want to add, but doesn't know how they feel internally on him.
- Caps could look to take on bad contracts for picks. Doesn't name any targets.
- Carbery has tweaked his offensive zone philosophy to get the defense involved recently and has tailored his scheme to fit this Caps team. Initial results look promising following the Florida game, they're 3-1-1 since, with most of the goals coming from the "house" area of the ice.</div></div>
Huge wall of text so here are my thoughts:
- Wonder if we'll see Lapierre again or if they'll go elsewhere. Since they still view him as a middle 6 center, I wonder if they've gotten the look they wanted and have a plan in place already for next year.
- In the vein of a Sandin style move: maybe Morgan Frost? would depend on if he's available.
- Caps seem slightly lower on Leonard than some scouts. Surprised by the "2nd line" tag.
- Not sure who fits the bill regarding veteran center. Pavelski?
- Interesting to see how Carbery has tailored his scheme. Would like to see how it works the rest of the year.

I'd say it's more because the Caps have greater needs elsewhere, but also a bit because they (in theory) have a set left side with Fehervary and Sandin. Feh has been easily the best defensive defenseman the Caps have had this year and I assume they'll be looking to continue to give Sandin chances before they look elsewhere. Couple that with what I'd say is probably a more pressing lack of a 2C and a top 6 winger, as well as likely being sellers at the deadline, and I'd say the Caps are probably unlikely to be involved in any sort of real trade talks regarding Chyc or Chabot.
