Even if that were true, it's a good thing the one thing he does well is the most important thing in the game!

If the Caps wanted a guy like Steeves to throw a bone to Hershey they would do what they did like 4 times last summer and just sign AHL all-stars (Phillips, Limoges, Dube, Snively) to NHL deals not waste a 3rd rounder

Yea man let's help Ovi get the record by trading away the only good offensive player left on the roster for a guy we're going to scratch and "Brandon Carlo"

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FarhanLuigi</b></div><div>He doesn't need the record at all. Let him just give it up. No one really cares about legacy, anyways.
Ovechkin has been like this for a good 5 years or more. The lost controller meme. How are you even a Caps fans? LMAO</div></div>
Since 2017 he has scored 328 goals, second in the league to Matthews' 368 and has won 3 rockets, been a first team all-star, won A CUP, and a conn smythe (which although it should've gone to kuzy is far from the only undeserved conne smythe in history). In the 25 playoff games they have played head to head, Ovechkin has 33 points to Crosby's 30 leading in both goals and assists. He's going to break a record that should be unbreakable. He just carried a completely awful Caps team to the playoffs (unlike a certain someone that's getting Hart shouts!). This is all in his ages 32 to 38 seasons, when most NHL players fall off a cliff and retire.
What someone thinks about Ovi is the easiest gauge of how smart they are as a fan, unfortunately there are way too many people with absolutely zero puck knowledge[/quote]

2023-24 Season Thread
Bummer it ended like that but just making the playoffs and playing meaningful games the entire year was fun as hell and a big accomplishment from this group. Ultimately to have had a chance in this series they needed to win their 5v5 minutes against a team that's just ok in that area of the game, have lindgren steal a game or two, and limit the damage on special teams. Only really did the first one, which makes it all the more frustrating because the second two I think were much more doable. Games 2-4 they certainly didn't "deserve" to win but they were right there for the taking. Rangers are going to get crushed by a much much better Carolina team.
Big offseason, and I expect some swings from GMBM. Think I'm jumping on the Vancouver bandwagon the rest of the way.

Maybe it's not worth it though if the belief is that Hronek is a product of Hughes, but I think it makes a ton of sense to go after a RHD to play with Sandin long term. Sandin-Carlson doesn't work too great.</div></div>
I know points isn't everything but he had less ppg this year than last and most models attribute almost all of the play-driving to Hughes. Even if he did improve, was it enough to make up the gap between the extra cost-controlled year? I don't think so

Washington Retool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Logicalicesports</b></div><div>Understandable, I do not think we will be competing next season at all to start. Mestis isn't great but its still pretty good. If he can make the jump to Liiga next season and do what he did in Mestis I would say he needs to be on the roster ASAP. I think the goal should be much younger than this season. But who knows maybe we do need to more or less firesale the entire roster and start over.</div></div>
I don't think we need to firesale the entire roster (in large part because they basically have 2.5 appealing assets between Dowd, Lindgren, and Jensen) and while we certainly have lots of old players this year we also have a large quantity of young guys playing or slated to play big roles next year in McMichael, Lapierre, Protas, Miro, Sandin, Fehervary, and even AA.
The problem IMO is that neither amongst our group of old players nor in the group of young players is there a skater who legitimately can make a claim to being top 32 in their position besides Carlson. To either compete next year OR to continue to retool OR to fully rebuild you need to be able to have truly elite talent. That was the logic behind rolling the dice with Kuzy and Backstrom this year even if the odds they'd return to that level were incredibly slim, and why I'm so bummed Leonard isn't signing. I like Girard and Knight a lot as players but I don't think either of them have that potential. If you're going for a "continue to transition around Ovi while not truly tanking" strategy (which is the right one to take!) I think they need to take some bigger risks. Guys like Laine, Zegras, Norris, PLD all have bigger downsides and a Konecny, Thomas, or Chabot will have a much larger acquisition cost but I think you have to be operating on those levels to pull this off successfully even if there's a risk it doesn't work out.

Washington Retool
I like and get the idea of all of these individually and think they're generally fair on value. At a macro level though I'm not sure anything here has enough upside, especially at forward. You'd be relying on big jumps from at least one of McMichael/Lapierre/Miro/Sandin and either Knight or Kuemper to find their game. Also while Persson definitely had an underrated season amongst Caps prospects, I would be shocked if he even made it to the last round of camp cuts -- the Mestis is not a great league and I think he needs probably 2 seasons in Hershey before he (hopefully) threatens for a spot.

Playoffs are going great because I'm enjoying watching them and have the chance to go to maybe Ovi's last ever home playoff game! Wanting your team to purposely get worse because it's more "optimal" is a terrible way to live. Moneyball is the worst thing to ever happen to sports man
