They need both. I suspect they will try to get a 3c because if they don't go outside the organization, the 3c will be either Krebs or kulich. Krebs didn't do enough in a small window he had at 3c, and the Sabres are under some pressure to win, that can't be plan A. Kulich has the same defensive deficiencies as Thompson and cozens, and he will be a rookie. The defense needs righties that can play hockey, and some grit, my guess is they will barely look for either. I suspect they will just roll out 5 lefties- dahlin-samuelsson, byram-power, ryan johnson-Clifton. It's not a build that I support, but there's talent there, it's probably gonna be plan A.
Edit- the op here has the Sabres moving ryan johnson for borgen, which would be a very solid move, but I don't know if that's enough to get borgen out of seattle.

Ugh. Ryan johnson is an nhl defenseman. My only problem with him is that we already have almost all left handed puck movers, and they aren't exactly tough physically. I think granato was quite comfortable putting ryan johnson in the press box, and playing what's left of Erik Johnson every night. I'm just not a fan of his skill set, especially with so many other guys providing the same thing.
This is a common theme for me, other teams fans look at ryan johnson, isak Rosen, noah ostlund, etc and they say, 'nah, let's see if we can get strbak or novikov or Wahlberg instead. Nobody wants our left handed smooth skating puck moving d, or our undersized forward prospects. For the life of me I don't understand why adams chose to prioritize these skill sets.

Would this make sense for Buff
No. If marner was cheap to acquire and would agree to a reasonable extension, might be worth kicking the tires. That's not the case here, we would be giving up a former 8oa (on an elc), plus 11oa for a late first and either one year of marner, or one year of marner plus the God awful extension he would want. Seriously, not interested. Unless you wanna talk about Skinner for marner, at least then the Sabres could objectively walk away after next year.

These don't seem realistic. Nobody is paying anything like savoie and 11oa for 1 year of Tavares, retention or not. I don't see adams trading ostlund and rosen and a 2nd for a rental, that's not at all how he does things. Rousek is not getting a 2nd. This team also looks crazy soft. They might be able to sneak into the playoffs based on talent alone, but they get absolutely rolled in the first round. And you've paid 4 early-mid firsts for rentals that walk into ufa.

I would have sorokin ahead of ullmark. And right around there, the ratings would drop by about 10 points. Like either you have one of these guys, or you have one of the rest. And swayman has been crazy good this playoffs, he might be moving up a few spots just on that.

I like it. My only question is would Dylan cozens be OK with Hathaway coming in, Hathaway broke cozens face in a fight, which I think derailed cozens season. I suspect he would be fine with it, it wasn't cheap or dirty, probably just an ill advised fight that ended badly.

Tavares
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Don't think UTAH gives Crouse for that package, or that Buffalo will be able to trade Skinner. Considering that Skinner could produce similar or more than Crouse, keeping him for now might not be such a bad idea. As much as the cap space would be great, signing FAs is usually expensive, and not every player is available to every team. So, if Samuelsson is available I think the Leafs would want him back in a trade for Tavares and that they would retain up to 4M to get the deal done. I don't think Buffalo trades Samuelsson though, unless they are signing Pesce or M Roy, Tanev would be great but he only gots maybe 1 or 2 good years left in him, making him a poor replacement for Samuelsson who you have for 6-years. If they sign Pesce for like 7M (not sure if he can be had for less), they won't be able to give Joshua that deal but that might not be a bad thing.</div></div>
I would move ryan johnson before Samuelsson, we have left shot puck movers stacked up to the rafters. Of course I expect other teams fans to have more interest in Samuelsson.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LivingAnew</b></div><div>Totally get that. I think Strbak is developing nicely and like him for the same reasons you do. Interesting that the Hawks have the opportunity to take his MSU teammate with the #2 OA this year (Levshunov.)
And I had the same thing in mind to target with #11 pick... If the Hawks elected to go offense with the #2 OA pick (Demidov or whomever), I want Yakemchuk with #11. Those two selections alone would make the Hawks' 2024 draft a big success, IMO.
But I digress... If you were to also add a "minor piece" to the Hawks for fully taking on the remainder of Skinner's full contract, and if Strbak is a bridge too far, whom might that be?
Thanks for the sane discussion. Cheers</div></div>
For me? One of Rosen, ryan johnson, and Wahlberg would be the most I would give up. And here's the funny thing, you'll say Wahlberg. Ryan johnson is an nhl defenseman right now, but soft left shot puck movers don't float everybody's boat. Rosen is pacing to be a swell middle 6 winger, with a great shot, and our ahl coach has been preaching two way hockey to him, teaching him that middle 6 wingers should be able to pk, and stuff like that. But Rosen isn't big, isnt at a point per game in the ahl, and he isn't bringing a physical game with him. Wahlberg is the biggest of the 3, just came over to play in the ahl near the end of the season. He was drafted as a center, and may be a power forward. He's the least polished and least talented of the 3, and I'd be shocked if you didn't say he's your guy.

Strbak is a bridge too far for me. We have no right shot d, and our d as a whole are left shot puck movers without much jam. Strbak is a physical defense first right shot d. In fact, I'm hoping that if the Sabres keep their pick, that yakemchuk is on the board, and they take him.

Meh, I think he's got the value close. I figure with no retention, 11oa should cover the amount he is overpaid, maybe buffalo adds a minor piece. I assume attempting to retain is covering what he is overpaid, so he wanted something of value returned. I'd be inclined to say- if Chicago will take him at 9m and we get future considerations back, fine. Whether the Sabres retain and get a late first or not doesn't matter much to me. If Chicago and Skinner would agree to that, the Sabres should take it and not look back. I still think that if the Sabres wanna give lindy a skinnerless roster come fall, it's gonna be a buyout.
