A franchise player is not just a good player that puts up points, but one that you build your team around and represents the "face" of your franchise.
Toews most certainly qualifies.
Kane, Malkin, and Tarasenko arguably do not qualify. They are elite productive players, but they are not the faces of their franchises.
Tavares, Seguin, and Ovechkin can be considered franchise players.
The future ones are potentially franchise players, but so far they've only fit into their teams.
They aren't the "face" yet and the team hasn't been built around them in any manner.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>elekesb</b></div><div>IMO Gaudreau and Horvat fall into the category of future faces of their teams</div></div>

I should have worded it differently, I meant how many franchise-caliber players are there in the NHL. Like for example Malkin is not the penguins face of the franchise but had he have been in another team, he would be their franchise player for almost any other team</div></div>
not almost is (carried crosby for his entire career)

I'd wait one more clear cap resign price see how chucky does at center for a full year then find your left hand defenseman. also seeing how jerabek preforms (he was second highest scoring defenseman in the khl and he wasnt playing on the stacked team)
but if i really had to vatanen is the best option

I know ...that's why I perhaps can fleece them a little more. I also think im way stronger down the middle. I think my D is pretty freaking good. I also have the best goalie coach in the league, he made Crawford and Price who they are today. He'll do good work with my prospects Lindgren and McNiven.</div></div>

Most people wouldn't consider trading Galchenyuk for just about anything. But Bergevin is.
Its the same deal with Subban/Weber. Trading to win now, instead of being patient and letting the wins come to you. As a leafs fan I was terrified of MTL pre Subban-Weber deal, as I knew they were a dominant force for the next 5-8 years. Now the window is closed to win in the next 2-5. Trading Galchenyuk is a logical move when you look at the age of the rest of the team, if they're going for it they need to do it now and Staal could be a good acquisition as a true 1C</div></div>
except trading Subban made Montreal worse

Drai is the real F-ing Deal. He looks like a younger more skilled Kopitar(which is high praise but man is he good).
and I agree, why are you under valuing Patches? Hes a 30 goal scorer every season. you can almost guarantee that at the start of every season.
I feel like as soon as MTL trades Patches they start looking for another patches again</div></div>
Like i said, if Im rebuilding I can get some young decent prospects along with some high picks. If I'm going for it, then i cant be picky, i gotta take that piece that im desperately in need for.BTW i would do the offersheet for Drai before the trade for Lindholm. It also depends who Im trading with. From what ive heard Carolina beleives they can be contenders in 1-2 years and giving up on Linholm for Paciorety is a short term boost. But if they keep Lindholm, hes gonna be around for longer than Patches. Perhaps Edmonton matches, perhaps not. I can always tell Chiarelli that Im offering straight up Galchenyuk...if he doesn't want I'll go forth with an offersheet, he'll get a bunch of late picks that won't help him immidiately. If he takes Galchenyuk he can also keep RNH cause Galchenyuk won't cost 10 mill. Trade Eberle for something juicy, and in the end it won't be so bad. He can hold on to a few players that he liked but couldn't keep cause of the contracts he has to give Mac and Drai. If not, I'm moving on to the next target...Wennberg or Johansen or Horvat etc etc.</div></div>
this is more than being just not picky though. its really a gift horse
