(PIT/CAR) - Guentzel, Smith for Bunting, Koivunen, Ponomarev, Lucius, 2024 2nd (PHI), 2024 5th (CAR)
Wow. This is an absolute fleece job by Carolina. I like Koivunen a lot, Lucius is solid, and Ponomarev is alright, but this is Jake freakin' Guentzel we are talking about. Pittsburgh doesnt even get a 1st unless Carolina makes the SCF. Feels like Dubas could've done so much better, guys like Morrow or Blake or Nadeau would've been far more fair.
For Carolina, this is the superstar they have long wanted. Guentzel is one of the best wingers in this league, and they didnt even have to give up any of their best prospects to get him. Excellent addition and he will thrive in Carolina.
For Pittsburgh, I already mentioned I really like Koivunen and I think Bunting next to Crosby will be very fun, but man this is underwhelming. I doubt Ponomarev or Lucius become much more than bottom 6ers, and they arent really guys you want to kick off your rebuild. This is going to be a tough pill to shallow for Pens fans who rightfully expected much more for a guy who gave his all to the organization for years.
The real winners here are NHL fans who are thrilled Vegas didnt land Guentzel. Heres to hoping they strike out on Buchnevich as well!

Love Saros, but you are bankrupting the Leafs to do this. Add Samsonov to the trade ( Nashville needs to replace Saros), take out Cowan & Niemela. Take out 1st or get 1/2 retention.

if they fire treliving
The author of this post should be fired for signing Tavares to a six year extension, and Brodie to five years. Another poor roster with 20 players and just six NHL Dmen.

Leafs Villain Arc
You're values are way off in both directions
1. Huge overpay for Wilson
2. Blues laugh and hang up
3. Minnesota questions your sanity
4. Thats a huge underpayment for Marner
5. Just makes no sense

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>The guy who thought Sutter was a good idea is the absolute last guy I want picking our next coach. This team could be in serious trouble.</div></div>
To be fair Sutter did turn CGY into a team who in their first year finished first in a division with EDM and VGK. If Markstrom didnt forget how to stop pucks against EDM we may have had a series lul
But like Gallant seems fell off afterwards as seems to be a 1 season wonder. And Brad recognized this and wanted him gone but ownership said otherwise so he went fine bye. And then CGY responds by firing Sutter lul
Berube though is different. Helped win the Blues a cup during a season where they were outside a playoff spot by Jan. He outcoaches Cassidy and gets them their first cup since 67
And his playoff record aint bad. As its basically second round for the most part. Would welcome him in

Toronto Maple Leafs signed William Nylander (8 Years / $11,500,000 AAV)
My thoughts on this signing:
A) I'm happy he's back and he signed for 8 years. It's been irritating that the big guys aren't going for max terms with this team, so Nylander and Rielly committing long term says a lot.
B) I don't care about the NMC. Every UFA is getting one.
C) 11.5 million comparably is more than what Nylander is expected to provide and it's entirely because of his production this season. In the offseason you were looking at maybe a 10 million AAV maximum. It's extremely frustrating that his cap hit % came in higher than Pastrnak and Huberdeau. You'd need a very convincing argument he was better than those two pre-contract signing.
D) As for the future cap, Toronto will figure it out. I'm less concerned with Nylander making 11.5 than I am with Brad giving guys like Kampf and Klingberg significant money to be burdens to the roster.
E) I have some strong opinions on the hard cap but they will not go over well here because the Leafs are burdened the most by it currently.

*Sigh*
It's a fair value contract. But the Leafs could have had a superb below market contract in the summer if Shanahan wasn't so ridiculously stubborn. I think it's obvious by now that he's the one stretching the negotiations, considering the pattern is the same with all three GMs that have worked under him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Just to add, success at the cap really can only be measured with success on the ice. Virtually all teams spend to the cap. Dubas's Leafs made the playoffs every year and one playoff round.
Trevling's Flames missed the playoffs as much as they made it. Trevling two signings of Huberdeau and Kadri should have excluded him from ever being an NHL GM again.
I was no fan of Dubas with his TDL trades and some poor signings, but certainly he did better than Trevling.
PS like your analysis.</div></div>
Treliving's signings of Kadri and Huberdeau were market value on UFAs.
The Marner contract by dubas was the worst negotiating skills I've ever seen from a GM.
There was simply no basis, no logic, no comparable, and no leverage to justify giving Marner that deal.

Nylander's an 8-9 million dollar player
He plays against 2nd line competition, and he doesn't go full throttle all the time
If he hits a scoring slump, he doesn't offer positive value bc his defence sucks...
I hope TO gets a cup but it becomes harder</div></div>
You lose all credibility when you say Willy is an 8-9 million dollar player.
Just a ridiculous thing to say.
I'll listen to someone saying its 250k-1mill overpay, but 2.5-3.5 overpay??? Ridiculous.

i'd take tanev but my prediction is that calgary will be in a playoff spot and unwilling to move him, while seattle will be on the outside by the tdl. that's more of a baseless prediction tho.
larsson is also more of a long-term solution, tanev has a notable injury record and is also well on the wrong side of 30 with a lot of hard miles. don't hate the idea of tanev but if larsson becomes available that's the guy to target imo
