he's on a 1-year deal. and probably wants to head to free agency. the return will be less the dubious.
and the return includes cap space to sign dumba.

Muzzin with about the same term who I think is better didn't cost nearly that much.

Better off with a potato as GM
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Barilko14</b></div><div>Marner overpay started with Babcock being an idiot to a rookie, and Lou having to give Sch. A bonuses to Matthews.
Nylander and the $3M RFAs got market value. Because Johnsson has not yet lived up to the deal due to injuries and whatever is hindsight. If you point to the $3M RFA deals as a blackmark against Dubas, then not much point in continuing this convo, because no way to crack through your bias. Kerfoot will be fine going forward.
Add $3.5M - $4.5M in caproom going into this season (pre-pandemic, unless Dubas should have foreseen that as well), and Leafs have no problem making moves within the cap.</div></div>
disagree on market value for rfa's.
every team has to deal with the unknown of the salary cap. there is never a guarantee it is going up.

no. marner is the most egregious. but all of matthews, nylander & johnsson got more than they should have as rfa's. kerfoot is a complete waste. can't add a big ufa contract in tavares and then overspend on your rfa's. cap management is about making choices and using your leverage in contract negotiations; not overpaying everyone.
we have no room to add depth/improve without taking away something we need.
if the team is well-managed, we are probably 2 years away from being a contender.
need to re-stock picks and prospects in the meantime. give sandin and lilgegren a chance to prove if they can be good nhl players.

put yourself into a better position. the more things you do right, the better luck you have.
if they were in the top 2 in their division, their playoff odds would have gone to 100%.

We never at any point had less than 22 active roster players. Every team in the league carries more than 20 players.
Zaitsev had nothing to do with the 1st, Kadri or Marner deal, so not sure why you would link him to that.</div></div>
okay. trade brown from this roster. bring in 3 guys @ $700k, like we had last year. done.
sure. since i'm using a time machine to reverse what dubas did, i'd be better off leaving the zaitsev trade stand. but as a full body of work, we would have better off without his moves from last year.

So today you would rather still have Zaitsev on the roster, rather than $4.5M in capspace?</div></div>
we started the year with hyman and dermott on LTIR. opened up space for cheaper/more guys. same thing all year with marner, tavares, rielly ceci, mikheyev etc. used their ltir space to get more than 20. so this roster was no different than what we actually did.
no. i wouldn't want zaitsev back. but if he meant having our 1st, kadri and marner on a better deal - then yes. i would take him back.

we had guys on ltir all year (plus horton and clarkson). and ran with small roster all year long.

7.4 for a 2-year bridge would have been plenty fair. I can't think of anyone getting more on a 2-year bridge.

Marner offer sheet thought experiment
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Im totally lost here man. The caphit isn't actually 16M a year, its simply the compensation factor that is determining the picks. (11.6mx7years)/5=16.24M If this equation equals a number higher than 10.5M the compensation is four 1st round picks.</div></div>
Do you have a source? I thought it was both for caphit and compensation.
From what I found just now, I am leaning towards what you are saying...but it's unclear to me...
The spirit of the lower of 5/7 rule is to give an additional signing advantage to the team that holds the rfa's rights.
If it's not applied for the actual caphit to an offersheeting team, then the rule gives no additional advantage to the current team for the highest end players (+10.5m contracts). That doesn't make sense to me.

if it's truly a offer sheet for marner - than the caphit is $16M/year. to get the 11.6, it would actually have to be a trade.
