Description
This is a scenario where the Flames decide to go for it, Ottawa can't get either guy re-signed, and it gets worked out as one mega deal. Three young player/prospects that are NHL ready, and three draft picks, as well as a cap dump in Smith. I would like to add Mike Stone as an additional cap dump here, but figure having Mike here means something for Mark, so I tried to work around it. No added long term money for Ottawa, just young players to join the rebuild that I feel are more useful than draft picks - young players that can play immediately. But still draft picks. A condition that says if Stone re-resigns with the Flames, the second turns into a first is alright with me. The money being reserved is for cap purposes, doesn't affect Ottawa after this year so it should be an easy thing to do to make it work.

From the Sens point of view, yes, they could do better separating these two, but would most likely get draft picks. I think the Flames offer of young players and draft picks is more interesting than straight lottery tickets, but I can understand the desire for more. But adding draft picks doesn't translate to adding players, and getting three young kids who can play accelerates rebuilds without hurting them.

The other issue is the Flames do not want to part with their forward depth. Moving Jankowski works because Duchene is arriving, but adding Bennett or Valimaki subtracts.

The new depth essentially creates a new second line that would do some serious damage, and create a play driving shutdown third line. If I was Bill Peters, my fourth line wouldn't spend much time on the ice per game. Try to get the first two lines over twenty minutes a night each, at least 15 for the second, and 4-5 of mop up work for the fourth line.

With ease seems surprising. What would be needed to make it happen?

That is a significant overpay for one or the other, so what does everything mean?
