Looking for options now and for next year

Maybe Zaitsev is not the problem.......while his cap number is too high for a 3rd pairing D (what he should be)......maybe he looks bad because his D partner is awful in his own end.... a soft turnover machine.

Gardiner does make some nice offensive plays and is a great skater........but his compete level for loose pucks in his own end is brutal. He is always 2nd to the puck and is a stick checker at best. Panic level is scary.

He is going to get paid this summer for his puck moving skills, but the Leafs have Rielly and Dermott.....they don't need Jake.......move him now for what is needed.

Could possibly turn him into Andersson and a pick which we could flip for a big nasty RD in McQuaid.

Gardiner is gone next year.......get an asset for him now

Calgary would not trade their only RHD prospect with some upside for rental LHD.. also is McQuaid better than Ozhiganov? I doubt it.. If Hainsey is not playing, Ozzy is.

Or I mean because Zaitsev tends to drag down numbers of any partner he's been paired with in his 2 and 3/4 years with the Leafs then maybe he is the problem....

I feel like McQuaid has way more to offer than Ozighanov, especially in the playoffs. He plays defense first and plays crazy physical. I love the idea of McQuaid and I would honestly put him out there with Rielly, at least to start. Give Rielly a right shot defensive minded partner that is not a liability. Add to all that you get a guy that can get into the trenches and take care of business.
