Description
Before anyone craps on this, look at it in terms of what benefits OTT gets via this deal.

-If they are making a serious attempt to re-sign and keep Mark Stone, bringing in his brother could be seen as a good faith move to allow them to play together.
-OTT doesn't really have anyone considered real strong coming up in goal and Gillies could expedite his development by getting more playing time. Anderson won't last forever.
-Czranik was sought after by something like 15-20 teams last summer, so clearly people think he's got "something" which he's shown flashes of for us here. He could easily get a full time role in OTT on a rebuilding team, whereas if we keep him he likely only cracks the lineup at times of injury.

-Adding Demelo gives Calgary the option to think about possibly moving out Brodie in the summer which frees up more cap room to take a serious look at trying to sign Duchene even with the pending Tkachuk deal that's required, OR opens up cap room to pursue a replacement in goal for Smith.

ANyway, as always this idea is of my own thinking. Don't expect anyone or everyone to agree.
Trades
OTT
  1. Czarnik, Austin
  2. Gillies, Jon
  3. Stone, Michael
  4. 2020 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Pick Conditional--becomes a 2019 1st if Calgary reaches the SCF
Yes we all know OTT likely wants a 2019 1st, but it's rumored the 2020 draft is much deeper than '19 so this would give OTT 3 x 1st rd picks in 2020

The cost for Duchene will be very very high. Think 1st and Dube to start. Teams like NSH and WPG can start their offer with Fabbro and Niku so CGY would need to add a good prospect to be in the game with those clubs

This is not even close dude. Your trying to convince yourself.

Adding Demelo just shows how bias you are in this situation.

Demelo is more valuable than anything coming back, other than maybe the 1st. Lol this is really bad.

Also Ottawa has Gustavsson, Hogberg and Daccord. All better chances to be an NHL starter than Gillies right now.

I don't think you really understand Ottawa's situation at all.

DeMelo has been our most reliable Dman in the DZone all year. They aren't going to move him.

Mark Stone has likely already made his decision one way or the other, he's just trying to squeeze a little more out of them before he gives his answer. He's also not the kind of guy who would make demands like "go trade for my brother".

Don't know what you mean when you say Ottawa doesn't have anyone in net considered "really strong." We have Gustavsson who is a top goalie prospect, we have the best NCAA goalie by a mile, and we have Hogberg who has been substantially better than Gilies this season, and could arguably make a push for an NHL backup job by next season.

Austin Czarnik is a 13th forward at the NHL level. Not a guy you get in return for a 1C.
