Description

Tried to retool the roster to emphasize Dubas' love for skilled players over pylons, while also using the nearly unlimited financial resources of the team to get rid of Zaitsev's boat anchor contract.

A lot of this rests on my fictional Dubas convincing Marner, Kapanen and Johansson to take bridge deals so the team remains competitive while it waits for cap flexibility from expiring contracts and rising HRR.

I'm also not 100% convinced that Edmonton would do a Benning for Brown/2nd deal, but enough of the old regime is left there to think that they might overvalue Connor Brown's connection to McDavid.

I'm still not 100% in love with the defence, but both new acquisitions have good advanced metrics and the handedness for the top four should please Babcock. Not sure Calle Rosen should be on his off-side for his first season in the NHL, but Justin Holl hasn't inspired me with his limited minutes.

Oiler fans have been saying Benning is hot garbage (just like Hamilton is over-rated).

Sens can keep Gaborik but maybe the Leafs will take MacArthur back.

Problem with the zaitsev trade... I believe that puts us over 110% of the cap. I do like the idea. Taking 2 salary dumps for zaitsev I think we could get demelo in return. Take benning out of the brown trade and target futures and this may work out.

So, I'm a big believer in analytics and both Benning and Hamilton are good adds by most metrics I follow. I'd take either of them over Zaitsev or Hainsey.

You'll both notice that Gaborik and McArthur are on long term-IR, meaning that neither of them will be a cap hit.

You don't need 23.

From the rulebook "Prior to the start of the season, each Club must submit to the NHL its "Opening Day Playing Roster" which shall be comprised of not more than 23 players. Each Club must have a roster of at least 20 players, composed of 18 skaters and two goaltenders. Players on Injured Reserve do not count in the 23-man limit."
