Some have commented on the Aho offersheet: "Why not move up in compensation if they actually wanted Aho?". Here's what that compensation could have looked like had the offer been made before 2017, where the habs drafted 25th overall after a solid season.
If I were Montreal I'd have done
Year 1- Cap Hit: 10.568588 S.B.:15.2 Salary: 700k
Year 2 - S.B. 15.2 Salary 700k
Year 3 - S.B. 8.3 Salary 700k
Year 4 - S.B. 5.3 Salary 700k
Year 5 - S.B. 5.3 Salary 700k
That's cherry picking data though. Other than the 2005 (Price) , 2007 (Pacioretty, Subban) and 2018 (Kotkaniemi) drafts, I would have gladly given any of those picks without hesitation. but that's with hindsight which no ever gets.
Moral of the story is that picks are just that picks. They don't always work out and in most cases they don't pan out the way they were hoped. Aho is a 21 year old top 30 player in the league.
To be honest, I'm actually not entirely sold on not giving up KK, Poehling and Brook and Fleury for him if I could.

KK "COULD BE" as good as Aho alone one day... MTL is in no position to give that up. It's not supposed to be cherry picking, it's just the most recent drafts (not enough information on the last draft yet, but Caufield would also look good on that list.) As @SammyT_51 pointed out, MTL has killed it in there past few drafts.
The only point I was trying to make is a lot of people seem quick to want to give up draft picks, even 4 first round picks, when the reality is you can nail some of these players in the draft with just one pick if you are patient. Aho himself was a 2nd round pick. These players are available in the draft.
