Description
***Decided to fill out the rest of the team and adjust the trade and remove the 2021 1st round pick as it was likely too much of an add***

To start I should mention I don't want to move Pulock, I believe he could anchor the Isles D for years to come, but let's be honest here, Defense is the one spot we are incredibly DEEP down both sides and scoring is what this team needs the most... with that in mind this trade was put together to grab Marner from the Leafs without having to sign him to an offer sheet.... looking for thought and feedback on the value, not so much "I don't want to trade Pulock" or "Toronto won't trade Marner" responses lol

Only did the trade for feedback, so salaries and the team aren't finished.

Rationale:

Isles - They give up a HUGE piece in Pulock, but with Dobson likely to make the team next season, Wilde likely ready the following season, Boychuk not going anywhere because of his contract (though I think it is movable) and Mayfield on an incredibly team friendly deal... the Isles decide to make a blockbuster move and include Pulock in a trade to get Marner.

With Toews progressing like he did last year and taking over the #1 PP unit, the Isles view him as a suitable replacement to grow into the #1 role until Dobson is ready to take that over.

Leafs - They get a #1 RHD to pair with Reilly and anchor their defense and the necessary CAP relief of not having to sign Marner to a large contract.

Admittedly, as an Isles fan who wants Marner, I'm not sure I do this trade, but I feel this is the kind of trade that would need to be done to bring Marner to NY.

Why move assets that have a combined value of more than 4 firsts? At that point, it's actually beneficial for you to offer sheet him.

And even that is a major overpayment for Marner.

I think Toronto takes it but why not just offersheet the four firsts and keep the known quantity of Pulock? Still believe Bellows has some promise as well but that's not my main point

Dobson should make the team but he's not a top-pair RD out of the gate. You're asking a lot from either Boychuk (who I think can be effective but only play 50-60 regular season games) or Mayfield (good defensively but doesn't generate enough offense)

Sub Mayfield for Pulock and I'd do it. I know he's not the same type of player, but Pulock/Bellows/JHS prob is worth 2 firsts anyway. Otherwise, I'd give up the picks.

Two reasons:

1) I don't see Lou submitting an offer sheet, as much as I'd want him to, he's too old school for that. Plus doing it this way we have a few firsts left over to retool the prospect pool.

2) Ho-Sang is likely on his way out anyway, so why not use him as a second piece in a trade for Marner. And Bellows is kind of blocked on the Left side with Lee, Bailey, Beau, dal Colle and Martin all there next year, so he becomes kind of a nice 3rd piece.

I hesitated on adding the 2nd 1st round pick, so in hindsight one of those could be removed and it would still be a fair deal.

Ultimately, I'd rather build a package with Mayfield, but I don't see TOR viewing him as enough for the main piece of a Marner trade.

As much as it's been rumored, I don't see Lou actually going through with the OS... he's too old school for that. I also am not convinced Marner would sign one, feel like it would have already happened by now if he was willing to do so.

I'd much rather sub Mayfield, I just don't see TOR accepting Mayfield as the main piece in a Marner trade.

In this scenario you could also keep Leddy (move out Hickey) to eat up some of those minutes while Toews and Dobson grow into the #1 pairing.
