Description
Since in my opinion Marner is a top 20 Forward in the NHL he should be payed like one, but he's a Winger which throughout NHL history the make less money than Centers(on top of not being a Goal scorer, which is another big money maker). His asking price is way to high. I also believe the Maple Leafs are low balling him and for too much term. So since Marner wants to make Matthews money why not give him 11.634% of the total cap over say 4 or 6 years(cant be 5 otherwise Matthews, Nylander, and Marner would be up). Thats a cap hit of $9.482M. Which would put him on par w/ Kucherov($9.5M, albeit a discount cause of Tax reasons) and Stone($9.5M, who is a better Forward right now than Marner). And both of those contracts are for 8 yrs where Marner would be up sooner and could then get his 8yr deal if he wants at prolly 13-15 %of the new cap. With the new US TV deal coming up soon and hopefully no lockout the cap should go up quite a bit.

Cap Increases(Its my best guess)
2019-20 $81.5M
2020-21 $83.5M(Lockout Free Cap increase)
2021-22 $86M(post TV Deal)
2022-23 $90M
2023-24 $94M(1st option for Marner in case of the 4 year contract) 13% $12.22M 15% $14.1M
2024-25 $98M
2025-26 $102M(2nd option for Marner in case of the 6 year contract) 13% $13.26M 15% $15.3M

So with this scenario Marner could cash in twice and not have to deal with the fan lash back if he causes the Maple Leafs to have to off load a player this year just because of his contract(fair or not).

Contract details
2019 4yr $9.482M $37.928M @11.634% of cap
2019 6yr $9.482M $56.892M @11.634% of cap
2023 8yr $12.22M $97.76M @13% of cap
2023 8yr $14.1M $112.8M @15% of cap
2025 8yr $13.26M $106.08M @13% of cap
2025 8yr $15.3M $122.4M @15% of cap

And I do realize this will probobly never happen but I can dream cant I.

Kucherov and stone signed for 9.5 in tax free environments using capfriendly's tool for taxes it would cost marner 10m extra to sign that contract in toronto as it would in states without state income tax and would be a significant increase in the states to begin with since federal rate is only 39.11 compared to 53.49 in toronto. That being said kucherov got 8x9.5 or 76m which nets to 45,564,515 after taxes. In order to get close (within 5k wasnt doing it down to the dollar) marner would have to be given a 98million dollar deal over 8 years... or 12.25m aav this deal would net him 45,569,261 after taxes. So while you might infer marners 9.482 vs stone and kucherovs cap of 9.5 look similar. Their actual take homes VASTLY differ. which is likely the reason marner wants a higher cap amount because their earnings are getting taxed more than the majority of other teams.

Your suggestion that Marner is a top 20 forward......let's narrow that down a bit. Let's say he's a top 20 player for all positions. That gets him 9m a year. So as you suggest 9m or so isn't unfair.

Leafs certainly don't have to offload Marner for cap reasons, unless some team wants to put in an overpaid offer sheet. And it's been five weeks and we haven't seen one yet.

I've been waiting over half my life for a. big US TV deal. Hasn't happened yet. The big TV deal that Bettman has implied he can get for the league....well we have waiting for that for his 25 years as commissioner.

Gee, I know Leaf haters will use any possible argument that Leafs HAVE to pay doesn't hold water at all. Especially when the use the argument that Florida is a tax free state? Gee, that would be a surprise to people working in Florida. But as any body should know, the posted "personal tax rates" have little to do with the actual take home pay of what hockey players/entertainers in Canada.
