I guess you’re close if you move the 24th man off the roster, but that’s not enough cap space to pay performance bonuses and we don’t have room for an overage next year. But we definitely don’t have an extra $1m next year for a Condon buyout, and without that, you’re less close.
To pay performance bonuses and keep a 23-man roster, after we move Domingue, we have $8.089m to split between Point and Erne (or whoever from Syracuse we want as a 4th line winger if we move him). At League minimum for that spot, we have $7.389m to sign Point. Realistically, Erne won’t sign for League minimum, and though players like Verhaeghe and Conacher in Syracuse have League minimum and can play there, Volkov and Barre-Boulet are each just under $900k. Really, what BriseBois is probably hoping for, barring a trade, is closer to $7.2m for Point.
BriseBois has stated that Condon isn’t moving and emphasized the need to pay performance bonuses this year because the last thing we need next year is a reduced cap ceiling. I don’t know if Rutta is moving, or if the Shattenkirk deal changed the Condon situation, or if BriseBois is just kind of making things work as he goes without a clear plan. But I have a hard time believing he would sign Shattenkirk without making sure Point fits, and there have been no rumors about any other impending moves.
A $7m deal seems out of the question on this site, but unless there’s a trade soon that has been concealed from the media, BriseBois really seems to think he can get that kind of deal done. If Point is seriously being that generous to us, I would be fairly angry if we don’t win him a Cup. But that would be extremely helpful for future negotiations (and probably upset Marner).
