Description
Someone help! I am trying to get Marner under the cap at a realistic number, and it's been tough. Those who say he will get 10.5-11.5 are shooting too high, but those who say he will finally get under 10 are probably shooting too low. Even at 9, it's REALLY hard to do. Can someone let me know how to do it? How do we get this to work?

The only way I could make it work with a realistic number ($10 million) is to only have a 22 man roster (skipping the 23 man rule). However: Does anyone know if the team HAS to have 23 players??? Can they do this?? Or will Dubas have to make another trade to make it work? Any options?

I do not want a bias dedicated to recent events: I know that he will want over $10, and will probably hold out if he does not get it...

Pay Marner a reasonable salary and it works just fine...

And you can have anywhere from 20-23 players on your active roster

Leafs aren't married to the current 22 man roster. If necessary Johnsson or Kapanen could be traded for cap space. But why 10m X 3? Seems high by any comparable. Marner is not a "hold out" even if doesn't sign by October . He's just an an unsigned player who has the choice to sign with any team in any league (much like you and me)

The three years was arbitrary. I assumed that the negotiation is about term AND dollar, and I assumed (rightfully or wrongfully so) that if he does get over 10, but not higher then 10, that he would want less term (Hence the three years). Literally throw a dart at the number of years. The point was trying to make it work, however if you think they can make a trade (Kerfoot, Kapanen or Johnsson), that's great. Better still if they are allowed to have fewer than 23 players on the roster. smile

Within that article is a link to another very well written article that goes into extraordinary depth about Marner and not only the kind of player he really is, but also the dollars he should get based on 39 comparables. 9.16 over 6 years is what he comes up with ultimately using Kane as his comp. Even that is being quite generous.

Teams rarely carry under 23 players. Leafs will get a little cap relief with the injury to Hyman. One trouble with a trade now is there will be a number of teams who might be trying to offload salary before October. It will be a buyers market with few suitors with cap space.
