Why would MTL want to dump Alzner? They dont need the cap space this year (unless you have some other big trade or offersheet in mind), and they have the actual $$$ to keep paying him. They would be better off to keep him for another year or two until they actually need cap space to sign Kotkaniemi, Gallagher, etc. It would cost less to dump his contract in the 2021 offseason than it would to dump his contract now

Assuming Im a team that has the cap space and is willing to spend money to get a player I'd buyout for an asset, I'd ask for a 1st rounder as my compensation. (Lottery protected) Look at what Marleau cost the Leafs.

But as mentioned above, there is literally no reason to trade Alzner as a cap dump right now. If the Habs have made a deal for Laine and need cap space, well that changes the narrative.

I know all of that. I asked a question out of curiosity.

As mentionned, I know all about that. There's many rumors but for all of them to become true, Montreal have to move assets. Since Alzner is the worst contract and is not even playing, i would think he will be moved but I know he's hard to move so... Here's why i'm curious.

Three years of dead money is way too much money and term to interest any team. Look what one year of 6.25m cap Marleau and 3m actual cash cost the the Leafs. A first rounder. Maybe Alzner cost three first rounders. But as indicated above...not this year.
