I could see the Preds making that trade, frees up cap for the next year when they have to extend granlund, smith, josi (or 2 of the 3)

It doesn't, Perreault's cap hit is pretty much identical to Bonino's and has the same amount of term left.

The purpose of the trade is that NSH has excess centers and WPG needs centers. If they both are the same player on the same contract but each satisfy a positional need, why not make the trade?
