Once he becomes healthy, Starrett will be given some NHL starts to see if he's capable of holding the backup job. If he is, Smith will be demoted, thus saving further money.

I give Leafs fans crap for their one sided trades, but this makes them look sane.

Explain how Edm Gets the two best players in the trade?

You do realize Morgan Rielly is one of the top 10-15 defenseman in the league, right? That's not even taking into account his contract.

I agree Reilly is top notch and they shouldn't be trading him but saying Johnsson is better than Nurse kind of undoes anything you are saying to as an counterargument. He isn't and there is nothing a "hockey guy" or "analytic guru" or straight up bias'd fan could make as an argument to say otherwise. Nurse is bordering on top pairing dman. Johnsson is a decent but great top 6 forward.
