It was a reach of a pick at the time
1) If Namestnikov wasn't on the opening night roster (if he was traded during summer or camp) Kravtsov would have made the team - he really deserved it over Namestnikov but the rangers had to try and up his value to trade. Still think he should be playing over Mckegg and Haley but at the same time you don't want him playing fourth line minutes when he could be playing 18-20 minutes a night in hartford.
2) Kravtsov has 11 points in 29 games, Wahlstrom has 15 in 35 -- not too different (see #3)
3) Kravtsov had to adjust to North America while Wahlstrom didn't-- i'll take the guy with a harder journey producing at a similar rate
4) Kravtsov has improved his game as of late and has 6 points in his last 10 games. He's starting to heat up, lets see what he can do when the fire starts
Kravtsov was listed as the number 1 drafted prospect by Button in 2019. He definitely stumbled a bit this year but it's not an easy adjustment for a 19 year old. That's what most college freshman are, so imagine being that age and needing to learn a new language, play on a different sized rink, and actually learn a system than the free style that the KHL is. He has the talent 110%, just needed to learn a little bit in terms of structure. Once he puts it together the rangers have a top 6 forward in him.
