Description
If there's a CBO Avs probably wouldn't need to use theirs, so acquiring assets from another team to make a CBO makes sense. NYI will likely want to use their CBO on Ladd, so Boychuk would be a suitable CBO trade candidate.

Note that Sakic also has a history of using the cap and buyouts to his advantage, given that he leveraged Orpik's buyout to get Grubauer cheaper, and also retained 50% of Barrie's caphit.

******************

Boychuk has $8m salary remaining, and at 60% (like last time) that means it would cost COL $4.8m in real dollars.

For $4.8m of real dollars and $6m in capspace for the next 2 years NYI would need to give up something of value. NYI lack 2nd round picks in both 2020 and 2021 so the only reasonable alternatives are:

- downgrade their 2021 1st (to COL 2021 2nd)

and/or

- to add a recently drafted 2nd round prospect, such as Bode Wilde. Note that NYI would still keep their top 5 prospects in Dobson; Wahlstrom; Sorokin; Bellows; and Holmstrom.

and/or

- NYI 2020 or 2021 3rd

In this AGM I have used the Bode Wilde and a 1st/2nd swap in exchange for the Boychuk CBO. For comparison, Marleau's $6m/1 year cap hit cost Toronto a 1st straight up to get rid of, so I figure that downgrading ~25 picks and adding a prospect recently drafted in the 2nd round would be reasonably fair for a $4.8m cash buyout and $6m capspace for 2 years.

*****************

In moving Boychuk and Wilde NYI would still have a solid D group going forwards, as shown below. They can afford to move a RHD prospect like Wilde more than some of their other prospects.

Should NYI be interested Zadorov could also be included in the deal with a suitable makeweight added on NYI's side.

Pelech-Pulock
Toews-Dobson
Aho-Mayfield
(Trade Leddy)

******************

From Colorado's perspective, Wilde would solidify Colorado's RHD depth, giving them 3 potential RHD's (i.e. Timmins/Wilde/Helleson) to replace Johnson/Cole on the 2nd and 3rd pairs behind Makar going forward.

Byram --------- Makar
Girard --------- Timmins
Graves -------- Wilde
Zhuravlyov -- Helleson

Do you think that NHL/NHLPA will allow such form of cap circumvention. NHL was salty with how they dealt with Orpik...buying out contract from other team in a manner that won't effect the cap far exceeds the Orpik deal in terms or cap circumvention, which is forbidden to some extent.

My firm believe is that if CBO's are going to be issued, it's going to be allowed for only in the instance where the team buys out player that has played at least 1 game for that respective team. And the teams that won't use the CBO should get a luxury tax to use on whoever they like for a year...

Personally I don't think NHL is going to implement CBOs as the owners are against it.

I agree that CBO's are unlikely. This was simply my rebuttal to the AGM by @KakkoForMauriceRichardAward, linked here: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1740558

That said, I don't see why it would be a problem for a team to acquire and buyout another teams player, as long as said player doesn't immediately sign another contract with the team that traded him. The fact that Oripk later resigned with Washington was why the Orpik deal was in the grayzone, not because of the buyout itself.

Understandable. My personal view regarding the issue is that CBOs should only be handed to teams in a huge pickle cap-wise, not as a tool to get rid of bad contracts en masse all over the league. It sort of destroys the point of the whole thing.

The problem with only handing it to teams in a pickle means that you're rewarding teams with bad cap management, and disadvantaging teams that are prudent with their cap. Teams who don't need a CBO should have a way of taking advantage of the CBO too.
