Yes, it was a great trade for both teams. Patches and Tatar are great fits for each team's respective system of play. Patches also came with a decent value extension. Trade value shouldn't just be made in a vacuum. Maybe from a pure asset value perspective it is a moderate loss for Vegas, but especially with his huge season this year, I don't think McPhee and McCrimmon are complaining.

Tatar was a sunk cost, and he didn't quite fit with Gerard Gallant. Even with Montreal being a perfect fit, it's a pretty nice pivot to turn that into Pacioretty, a legitimate first-line quality player.
