Description
Basically Hamilton for Pietrangelo

Blues probably can't re-sign Pietrangelo without major moves - by moving him they still get to have an elite top-pair RHD.

Canes get a more expensive, but better overall defenceman. Hamilton will probably want 8+ in 2 years anyway, so the price difference isn't huge. Pietrangelo signs for that amount because the frozen cap limits his options.

Seems bad for Carolina but I'd do it if I was the Blues

Far more likely the Canes approach him in FA assuming the Blues can't figure out their cap ahead of time (in which case they would simply re-sign him) and once Pietro is signed, they send Hamilton out for more assets.

Gardiner to MTL makes a ton of sense though

Or we can keep Hamilton and use the other 2.7 million to better the roster? If AP was willing to sign for 8 million a year, I have little doubt STL would sell of Bozak and Steen to keep him.

It really doesn't.

Gardiner refused our better offer last offseason, then fell off a cliff. Since then Chiarot and Kulak have emerged as solid LD for us, and Romanov likely pushes Mete out of the lineup next year. We aren't looking for disappointing LD at this point, and we aren't trading a 2nd for someone that flat out refused us so recently.

YOU KNOW WHAT?! Those are actually good points. I may have completely forgotten about Kulak & Chiarot. I haven't been following MTL closely since the return to play and largely forgot what happened from 5 months prior.
