Description
There aren't many, if any, Blues fans that would endorse this move, myself included. And because of that, we rarely get to see the Blues side of it in an armchair. But I wanted to see what it might look like if this fantasy trade went down. I picked a Nylander-for-Parayko swap that was cap-neutral to start with. Next I signed Pietrangelo, clearly a prerequisite to moving Parayko. And then tried to see what moves could be made to actually make the team better. I didn't move anyone who signed a contract or came in a trade within the last 365 days because that would be pretty bad business and pretty unrealistic.

So... what do you think? Is the team better or worse? Are the moves realistic?

I think you'd have to look at one additional trade so you can carry a 23-man roster considering they're about to pack 82 games in between December and May.

Is the long-term cap sustainable? My math is showing that it would be extremely tight the following year, depending on how much is spent on the goalie tandem. Tight enough that Schwartz is probably a gonner in FA.

In my opinion, the losses of Parayko, Bozak, Steen, and Sundqvist would really hurt the defensive structure, especially on the PK. Without Parayko, you're looking to Pietrangelo to take the tough matchups and his offense is going to take a hit - so Faulk, Dunn and Perunovich would have to be able to carry that weight, but also be able to defend. The offense would improve, and the first round picks would be nice. If Schwartz could be extended, the outlook isn't really that bad.

I've done this trade a few times with acceptance from a few SJ fans. If anything, it's selling low after what Perron has done on his contract. But the cap space is nice.

It certainly makes you a faster team, at least up front.

Yep, more speed and probably more possession, especially when it comes to carrying the puck in and out of the zones. The question is, if you put Pietrangelo-Scandella or Pietrangelo-Dunn against the Mackinnon/Scheifele/Pettersson/etc lines in the playoffs, are you gonna get shelled beyond what the offense can counter? It would be nice to be able to find another shutdown d-man to add to this lineup, but who do you have to move to find him? As a Leaf fan, you def know the feeling lol - anyone who fits that mold apparently costs a fortune from other teams.

Edit: the take-home point is this: Faulk doesn't do enough on either side of the puck to justify his $6.5m cap hit so without moving him, it is extremely challenging to match up defensively.

Not sure the Leafs would want to take back the Bozak contract. Maybe if you retained a bit or added a pick?

I get the Parayko-Nylander swap, but Kerfoot is a lot younger and cheaper than Bozak. Id say they are equally good, but I cant see the Leafs who are already cap strapped, to take on a big contract like his

I am a believer that having lines that can counter Petterson and make him defend is how you beat them. I thought St Louis was the perfect matchup for Vancouver. Still didn't think they would win but I did think Petterson and Horvat could pose problems for St Louis. I think being big and tough only goes so far and a fast team with some jam can cause you problems. As a Leaf fan, I think all our issues are massively overblown. I do believe a RD is needed but moreso as a stop gap. I think Liljegren, Dermott, Sandin and Lehtonen could all be effective top 4 defenceman in the near future. I also think the biggest problem in TO is the depth forwards. I want to see a change over there. Kap can go anywhere for a RD stop gap and Johnsson likely has to go for cap reasons but I would like to see a guy like Loughton added and a winger who likes crashing the net no matter whats going on. I think if a couple of players took the puck to the crease against Columbus a few times it could have been a turning point but beyond JT, Nylander and Hyman, not many Leafs have any appetite to get to the crease.
