Description

-Clear cap space by trading Kerfoot and Johnsson. Bring in a relatively cheap shutdown defenseman from CBJ. CBJ has their studs on the back end, and could use some forward depth.
-Thornton takes a discount because he's desperate to join a club with a future.
-Spezza resigns for the minimum because why not.
-Fair value on the returning RFAs, and full time promotions for Robertson (looked great in playoffs) and Korshkov - who looked good in preseason, and can bring some more size to the bottom 6

CBJ aren't interested in Johnsson/Kerfoot, because we need true top-6 talent, preferably a 2C. We have plenty of bottom-6 types.

While they still may not be interested in this deal, Johnsson is a true top-6 talent.
People here are really undervaluing him, probably because of his injury-plagued season.

Not saying this trade works, but if it doesn't, it's not because Johnsson isn't a "top-6 talent".

But we need guys who are proven at that level of production. $3.4M/yr for (most likely) a middle-6 winger (when we really need a center) in the years when we're trying to extend our core is probably a non-starter. At that price, we'd be better off just extending Anderson.
