Description
The Leafs have needed D for a while, and their current D is still not great, but in having Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie, Bogo, Holl, Dermott, Lehtonen and Sandin that is simply too many NHL D. Some people say that is a good problem to have. I disagree. While it can sometimes be a good problem to have in camp. It is bad problem to have during the season. No one is going to want to sit and it is interfering with proper development. Appropriate extra D are older and either never were full-time NHLers or are former full-timers who can't handle that role any longer (See the extra Ds who both Dallas and Tampa used in the playoffs last year).

The two trades below would happen during pre-season or early in the season allowing the team to first see how good each are this year and how pairings fit together and then trade based on that. I think that there are many teams who would be bidding on both Dermott and Lehtonen. (I would include both Buffalo and Boston).

Lehtonen is likely going to be a very good D, but he is 1 year to UFA and Toronto can't afford to re-sign him if he shows that he is top-4.

Dermott certainly has top-4 potential but he is unlikely to be given a real shot in Toronto behind Rielly and Muzzin. Both are on cheap contracts right now. Dermott remains RFA after this season.

Holl is overpaid, but works fairly well with Muzzin, and also meets the expansion draft criteria.

Sandin was on the Leafs' for almost half a season - usually with completely inappropriate partners. Bogo is an ideal partner for him. Either play him in the NHL or trade him.

Lilly will hopefully be able to make the jump the following year (with an appropriate partner - not Sandin).

Fans hate Marincin. They shouldn't. Marincin and Rosen are good for the extra D roles.

Why would we trade a good defenceman on a 925000 contract? If he ends up being good this season, great! We have him on a steal of a contract. If not then he’s a depth player that can be on the Marlies for added depth. Why would we trade away depth? And yes it is a good problem to have because you need depth. We can’t have guys like marincin in the lineup again. Dermott is on a probe it deal to see if he’s gonna be part of this team in the future. Again, why would we trade 1. A young asset 2. Added roster depth. I don’t see the logic here.

Kings aren't giving a 2nd and a 3rd for a player who might not even come to America and is a UFA next season unless you can sign Lehtonen long term at something cheap this is too much of an asking price.

Not sure why you'd trade away Dermott while he's making under 900K. But I guess if a team is willing to overpay with 2nd and a 3rd, you should go for it. It won't be Ottawa though.

My AGM is based on reality, not the fantasy that most Leafs' fans have right now that a bunch of NHL D are going to sit out. That has never happened and it never will. 2 of Holl, Dermott, Lehtonen, Bogo or Sandin will be traded before the season is over. Buffalo did this last year going into the season with Dahlin, Risto, Joki, Montour, Miller, Bogo, Scandella, McCabe and Pilut. All they ended up with, as anyone other some fans living in fantasy land would expect, was a team full of pissed off players and trade demands over lack of playing time. Scandella was traded for much less than he got a couple months later, Bogo was soon gone and Pilut, who they could really use right now, said up yours and went to the KHL.

Dermott signed a prove it deal. You need opportunity to prove yourself. He is not going accept being scratched. Neither is Bogo, Holl or Lehtonen. Sandin will likely be asking for a trade soon based on the way he has been treated and the poor development strategies from the team. Outside of fantasy land, and having assets to trade, this (believing that you can keep young NHL D with no spot for them) is not a good problem to have, and two of D will not be on the Leafs' by the end of the season.
