Jones has made it known he's not going to re-sign and a lot of Leaf fans seem to want to deal Reilly. Both have similar contracts with 1 year remaining. Is there a possible deal there? Not a fan of either team, just curious if that's a shake-up move that benefits both teams.
Not likely, Reilly is a rental at this point and would put Columbus in the same position they are now with Jones and Reilly is a lot less likely to stay.
In a vacuum this trade balances. However a lot of other pieces to look at. If CBJ moves Jones, it will be for future assets or prospects not a d man in his prime. Rielly would not likely waive for CBJ. Toronto has no reason to trade Rielly.
Despite what a lot of people will post on here, Toronto is still in win now mode. No point in trading their best defenseman who can basically act as a rental for them for this coming season.
All that being said I would be thrilled to have Jones in Toronto as I think he is a great dman.
Good feedback. It was just a brainwave I had with Leaf fans being upset with his playoff performance and Jones mentioning he's leaving.
Not to get too crazy but is there a 3-way trade scenario out there? Just thinking RHD are harder to get than LHD so does Toronto make that move to go all in?
Example-
Toronto sends Reilly + picks/prospects to Columbus for Jones with some retention (maybe $400k to even cap hits or potentially more depending on additional asset quality if Leafs want to gain more cap space)
Columbus flips Reilly to Team C for a prospect/pick package to aid re-build
Toronto gets a top end RHD
Columbus gets a good haul of picks/prospects
Team C gets a first pair Dman in Reilly
