Komarov and Hickey are just older and more expensive versions of Lafferty and Riikola. They have pretty identical stats over the past couple years but I think it makes sense for both sides. The pens take a couple of very overpaid players that are pending UFA’s in exchange for a top 4 d on a long term contract that may find himself too low on the depth chart for the pens in a year or 2 to be making 4 million per. But he still has positive value. And Komarov/Hickey are experienced vets that Sully may trust more than Lafferty/Riikola. So it’s a hockey trade that the pens get the shorter term players to be placeholders until younger players like Poulin and POJ are ready to be nhl regulars. It also adds a bit of grit and physicality to the front and back ends that sully may actually play.
When Geno comes back he will insert to 2nd line between Bellows and Kapanen. Whoever the weakest link between Angello/Komarov will come out of the lineup.
