Description

It’s pretty simple…
1) You can call the Hughes and Nico lines any combination of 1/2, 1a/1b, etc but bottom line is both sets of lines worked well at times last year and get the start together.
2) Expected that Mercer starts out a 3C, he needs vets on his line and Ruff is going to give Johnsson a chance to prove himself before considering to drop him into the bottom 3 or out of the lineup.
3) Holtz will play at some point, but throwing multiple rookies on one line or inserting them into the top 6 doesn’t make sense at this point. Pair Holtz with Foote and Boqvist in Utica and let them tear it up.

I get putting a vet on the third line, but Id prefer just making that first line as scary as you can, by flipping Tatar for Kuokkanen. Hughes line will (should) see considerably more ice time than the Mercer line, so I'd vote to stack it with the best combination you can. If history is any guide, you should expect a Tatar-Hughes-Sharangovich line to drive play & have high possession numbers.

Kuokkanen is young, but he has plenty of pro experience (including AHL time) & has proven to be a smart two way player. He should provide Mercer with some stability. Id expect this line to be sheltered a bit to begin, but as they settle in, TOI will expand & situations more diversified.
