Description
With Nurse and Smith both being On IR, this could be a move for the oilers to shore up both their D and G positions. There seems to already be momentum behind Chiarot to Edmonton even before Nurse went down. Now with Smith down long term, I don’t know how confident the oilers feel putting their goalie fate in the hands of Skinner/Koskinen after what could be a special season for the team.

This could kill 2 birds with one stone. Cap hit should be more or less a wash, with Edmonton a solid backup/1B goalie for next year.

No. IMHO any pick in this years draft is gold as it's already known to be one of the deepest drafts in a very long time. Holland has his work cut out for him this off season with who we need to re sign and there is a strong possibility we lose Puljujarvi or Yamamoto and having a good young 1st or 2nd round pick to go into the system would help a lot.

How do the Oilers "shore up their goaltending " by trading Koskinen for a worse guy?

Fair enough - I can see that for sure. 1st round picks are indeed a prized commodity. Nonetheless I think the value is there and it does address the Oilers needs, but I can understand why you wouldn’t want to give up the first.

I think my counter would be to take Allen, Koskinen out and the 1st out, and just have chiarot for the 2nd. That might be more palatable. I know some have been saying chiarot might get a 1st….while if course I would like that, I think he gets a 2nd plus maybe a later round pick as opposed to the 1st. A 1st is a lot for one playoff run of chiarot (and I really like him and what he brought to the team in the playoffs last year). He can definitely be useful to have for a deep playoff run. Very hard to play against, but again , I think he’s more of a 2nd + something small as opposed to a 1st.

Isn’t Koskinen pretty bad? I don’t see him as a starter of a Stanley cup contender. I think Allen is an upgrade while also opening 2M in cap space. Allen isn’t a starter on a Stanley cup contender either but I think he has higher upside when he’s on and I see him as more consistent as well. I’d feel better with Allen than Koskinen personally

Chariot is already being rumored to get a first from a team. MTL likely retains 50% to get that first but they likely do get it.
