Since the Leafs have cap room in the 2017/18 (not this lineup) why not use that leverage to get a UFA or get a good defenceman from a team with cap issues. Trading a potential star on ELC is no bargain for the Leafs.

No read my explanation. Leafs have NO reason to trade potential stars when they have cap room and their stars of their teams making are making relatively cheap more. The purpose of trade is the total value of a trade and not just one on one playing value.
