Description
Additional retention on Koskinen in the Coyotes deal saves their ownership something between $750k and $1M (on mobile, can't math it to 100%). The only reason Arizona needs to retain is to bring Kessel's cap hit down (cash owed is negligible).

Kind of "experimental" trades: if the ask for Chychrun was Broberg and the next two firsts but Holland balked, then I suspect that he's hesitant to move his firsts until the draft and that moving established prospects is probably off the table. If we consider that he'd prefer to not move them for single-season rentals, then I can't see the Oilers paying whatever stupid price exists for Chiarot and Fleury and will try to quantity>quality their problems away at the deadline.

Local media has been hammering the idea of two additions up front, one of which being internal (Holloway) and any rental solution to the #3C problem pales in quality to running the big 3 pivots on their own lines, hence Kessel. I suspect that they'll take the deadline to acquire more 2023 picks as they don't have a lot in terms of assets to trade next year and that they already own the top half of the draft this year.

There's talk of adding a defenceman, but I don't really buy it: all three of the LHD kids can come up in a pinch, Lagesson has been good this year, and nobody in the Oilers management would trade Russell. I've flipped Koekkoek for Schenn for a handedness balance but it's not a move that needs to happen. Just not sure how much the organization trusts Berglund in a pinch. Team defence is going to have to improve as a function of more 5v5 scoring and better goaltending. I don't think the cheap options are better than anything Edmonton currently has.

I don't hate the idea of bringing in Holtby. Sounds like he didn't want to sign here but a dozen regular season games and a playoff run is probably tolerable for a short-term stint. Probably doesn't re-sign, which is fine by me if he maintains his .925sv%

The 2022 2nd round pick you used in the Holtby trade is tied up in the Keith trade so couldn't be used. The gift that keeps on giving!

On Holtby's expense, I agree, a good decision, he's experienced, he's doing good hockey at the moment, and in that case we're moving away from an unreasonably bloated market on Flary, an absolutely stupid first round request. I think spending our first round on characters like Fleury, Chiarot is a loss to our team. Their red rent price is the second round, period. Even if the Rangers or Washington want to pay such a price, we must categorically reject such proposals. I think this year the only rent that is worth the first round is Pavelski. And I think it's worth considering this kind of strengthening for Edmonton in the playoffs, this risk should pay off.
I disagree with you about the composition of our third pair of Lagesson-Barry defense, for a team that wants to go far into the playoffs, this is a terrible pair and which essentially makes this task impossible.

Just keep Koekkoek and make it a 4th or 5th for Schenn. You might need him as a depth piece in the playoffs.
