Description
Since the Jets likely make 2 small moves at the TDL, I decided to have some fun with it and go overboard.

Schmidt is currently performing better offensively than severson, but severson is an upgrade and he’s a right handed shot who could be a long term partner for Morrissey. Definitely worth the price to upgrade. Schmidt has been solid this year, can play PP and PK. I just think with the amount of LHD Winnipeg has, they can spare one and upgrade the right side. This also gives NJ a solid C prospect in Nikkanen who’s developing his game in the Liiga as a 20 year old. Played solid in the WJC when he was there. Gawanke is playing well with 17 pts in 27gp in the AHL, likely 1-2 years away. Will likely turn out to be a solid defender, ceiling is likely a #3 dman.

If this isn’t enough let me know, I’m more than open to feedback.

As for the DeMelo trade, I know I just said jets lack RHD. I just can’t see where else a cap sacrifice is made to make room for the next trade. DeMelo can be replaced with Heinola and it allows the jets to have enough cap space to improve their 2RW spot. Pretty much sending him to any team on his list or where he’d waive to for a 2nd. He’s a useful #4/5 dman that can PK well on a pretty cheap deal with reasonable term. Copp could be the other cap sacrifice but I doubt the jets do that. They probably want to keep him.

As for the Kessel deal, I think it makes sense to bring him in as a rental. I think he’ll easily fetch a 1st especially with retention. Nathan Smith is an under the radar prospect. I mean he’s 23 but he’s still playing in the NCAA and is the current scoring leader with 33pts in 22 games. He’s a right handed center and is quite a solid player. I don’t know if he’ll sign with the jets being an American boy from florida, but it’s likely he signs with Arizona considering tax and weather.

Again, open to feedback, so feel free to let me know in the comments.

Regardless of our standing at the TDL, I’m 100% behind the Schmidt trade idea and acquiring Severson, but I don’t think NJ does this.
I wouldn’t move DeMelo to make room for Heinola. I’d move Dillon and put Heinola with Pionk.
Kessel would be a last option trade, but I don’t think we’ll be in the running at the TDL so I wouldn’t do it.

We were so soft last year in front of the net, and we solved that with Dillon, extremely hard to play against. Not the time to get rid of that. I mean ideally we just move Copp, and retool. But that won’t happen so if we are going for it, try and get severson, and make a trade for a 2RW. I figured that might not be enough for severson, wonder how much more I need to add.

Devils are already set up to have too many LD and not enough RD moving forward. This trade isn't a fit.

    Just guessing, but…Schmidt+Vesalainen/Nikkanen+Beaulieu+2nd/1st

Not sure this is the year we should be pushing for a run. I think we will struggle to catch up and earn a WC spot. If we are to the point of just squeaking in, I don’t want to spend any assets to upgrade. I’d be fine doing a 1-1 swap to a position of need, Vesa for a RHS winger who is a another reclamation project for example.
I don’t mind the NJ trade as it really doesn’t take anything away prospect wise although I doubt Jersey does it. Schmidt just bought a house in Peg too, so that would suck for him lol.
Play Heinola, Perfetti and Gus, get them up to speed, hopefully sign Smith when his season is done (I believe we still have his rights 1 more season as he was a late college guy) and play them in playoffs.
